We break down 36 NFL mock drafts and look at the position and players projected to the Cowboys in the 2014 NFL Draft.

In this second edition of our mock draft tracker, we take a peek at 36 different mock drafts by some of the better know draftniks on the interwebs.

We noted last week that the consensus opinion had narrowed down the Cowboys likely first round picks in the 2014 draft to two defensive tackles, Aaron Donald and Timmy Jernigan. And it's no different this week, as 24 of 36 Cowboys picks are a defensive tackle, with Donald and Jernigan combining for 20 of those picks.

But right in the middle of our jubilations over having the choice of two top DTs, Bryan Broaddus kicks down the virtual door of our BTB party room and tells us in no uncertain terms that Jernigan is not a three-technique.

"@SonnyKoufax10: @BryanBroaddus Is Jernigan strictly a 1T for us?" That's what they graded him as.

— Bryan Broaddus (@BryanBroaddus) March 9, 2014

And as if that isn't enough, Broaddus then slaps everybody across the head by ruling out a 1-technique for the Cowboys in the first round.

@Seano2131 Really like the player but not sure this club would take a one technique with first pick. We saw what happen with Floyd last year

— Bryan Broaddus (@BryanBroaddus) March 7, 2014

Slap, slap, slap goes Broaddus, with a bonus slap for all the FSU fans among us.

If what Broaddus is saying is even remotely true, then the Cowboys could be in a bit of a pickle, because Donald looks like the only viable three-technique worthy of the Cowboys' first round pick. And going all-in on one prospect who may or may not be available at 16 sounds like a pretty risky strategy.

Which is why looking at who else might be available with the No. 16 pick might be a good idea.

Couple of top-line thoughts:

  • Charlie Campbell must have come across some significant new information sometime between Monday and Thursday last week. In his mock for Walter Football on Monday, he has Aaron Donald going 32nd, and Ra'Shede Hageman going 14th. Four days later, this time for Foxsports, he has Donald jumping to 15th, while Hageman tumbles out of the first round completely.
  • IF Donald is picked by the Bears (like in 10 of the mocks above) AND Jernigan falls to 16, AND the Cowboys don't want to draft a 1-technique (per Broaddus), THEN could Jernigan be an interesting target for teams trading up?
  • The last time a defensive tackle was not picked with one of the first 13 picks was in 2005. Yet 34 of 36 mocks surveyed suggest the first DT this year goes to Chicago at #14. Is everybody underestimating this year's DT class? What if there's a run on DTs like there was on guards last year?

Here's a further breakdown of the mocks by position and by player selected:
