Safety is a need for the Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys need a safety. Many will say that the time has come for the Cowboys to address the need with a top draft choice. That is certainly one good idea (hello Grant Delpit or Xavier McKinney). There are others who would rather devote that draft pick to a different position and find a temporary solution to safety later in the draft or in free agency. For so long this has generally been the Cowboys way.
Say the Cowboys do decide to test the free agency waters for a safety. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Damarious Randall are potential fits as they both played for Mike McCarthy’s Green Bay Packers, but what if that doesn’t whet your appetite?
Should the Cowboys consider Eric Berry?
Something interesting happened during Saturday’s edition of Good Morning Football: Weekend. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that former Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry is looking to return in 2020 and sat out this past season intentionally.

Berry just turned 31 years old and has played in three total games over the last three years (one in 2017, two in 2018). The last season that he played in all 16 contests was in 2016, a year that saw him earn Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors (PFF gave him a 90.1 overall grade for this season).

The Cowboys did put their toe in the Eric Berry waters last season when he visited the team but ultimately left without a deal. Garafolo noted that Berry had opportunities to play in 2019 so it’s possible that Dallas did offer him something that he just turned down, but the interest has been there before which is the point.
Maybe you feel that it’s not worth trying Eric Berry at safety because he has played so sparingly in recent memory. That’s fair, but it’s hard to forget the type of safety he was when he suited up for Kansas City. At his peak, Berry was incredible and for that reason it’s potentially worth at the very least gauging his interest once more.
Of course, if the Cowboys are ready to draft a safety with the 17th overall pick then that changes everything. They should just tell us their draft plans. Problem solved!
