A revised take on the Cowboys potential 53-man roster
An update on the “down-roster battles” series. Defensive line cuts might be the hardest.

Recently, One Cool Customer posted about the Dallas Cowboys depth chart in advance of the Colts game. He makes the point that a lot of painful cuts will be coming. Certainly lots of cuts will have to be made.
My own previous guess at a 53-man roster was published July 6th, before training camp. It’s time to update that.
Offensive line - 9
Not much has changed here. The only question is who will start at left guard, and it’s looking like the Cowboys would like it to be Chaz Green if he can stay healthy.
Starters: Tyron Smith, Chaz Green, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, La’el Collins
Depth: Emmett Cleary, Jonathan Cooper, Joe Looney, Byron Bell
Cuts: Kadeem Edwards, Nate Theaker, Dan Skipper, Ross Burbank, Clay DeBord
The Cowboys will keep nine because of injury concerns about several players, and they will stick with the most experienced players, rather than taking any rookies.
Wide receiver - 5
Nothing has changed here.
Starters: Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley
Depth: Ryan Switzer, Brice Butler
Cuts: Noah Brown, Andy Jones, Lance Lenoir, Brian Brown, Uzoma Nwachukwu
Noah Brown and Andy Jones have had moments, but the Cowboys will stash them on the practice squad. With Rico Gathers emergence as a receiving option, along with more balls likely for Ezekiel Elliott when he is on the field, a sixth receiver would never be active.
Tight end - 4
Gathers is now a lock.
Starter: Jason Witten
Depth: Rico Gathers, James Hanna, and Geoff Swaim.
Cuts: Blake Jarwin
Rico Gathers has burst onto the scene, and already overtaken James Hanna and Geoff Swaim as a receiving threat. In my eyes, he should be the #2 guy, though he’s likely to split time with James Hanna until he can learn to block as well as Hanna. Geoff Swaim may be active as a special teams player, but otherwise has been eclipsed. He’s really not needed on offense unless someone else gets hurt.
