With Tony Romo out for an extended period of time Dallas is looking at all options to serve as the backup for Brandon Weedene
No matter what the feelings are about Brandon Weeden's ascent to the helm of the Dallas offense, the show must go on. With an interim starting quarterback in place the Cowboys thoughts now turn to deciding who will fill the role vacated by Weeden's elevation. The Dallas Cowboys have several options that are under consideration.
The first option would be to look at bringing Kellen Moore up from the practice squad. The former Boise State Bronco was signed late in the preseason once he was cut by the Detroit Lions. Kellen has spent the past three seasons as the #3 man on the Detroit roster. If Moore it promoted to the roster it will mark the first time in his career that he would be on the active list.
The Cowboys are also looking at a pair of veteran NFL players who both have starting experience on their professional resumes. Former 2011 first-round draft pick Christian Ponder will work out for Dallas on Tuesday. He has 36 career starts in the league and a career record of 14-22. Not impressive, to be sure, but in his defense Christian did play with some lousy teams in the frozen north. During his time in the league, both in Minnesota and with the Oakland Raiders, Christian completed 59.8% of his passes for 6,658 yards and 38 touchdowns. There were flashes during his career where Ponder appeared to be on the verge of making a name for himself but things never completely came together the way it was hoped that they would.
Former Green Bay Packers passer Matt Flynn will also be put through the paces by the Cowboys. Flynn had a decent run after being pressed into duty behind Aaron Rodgers. He is 4-4 over eight career starts. His biggest single success came in a record breaking day when he went 31 for 44 and 480 yards against the Lions. It was this success that propelled him to a big contract in Seattle where he lost his shot at the top job to some guy named Russell Wilson in training camp. In his limited experience, Flynn has a 61.3% completion average. He has thrown for 2,541 yards and 17 scores.
Two other lesser known names, Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson, will also be looked at. Johnson has been around the league for a while, mostly in Tampa Bay. Over five seasons he appeared in 29 games with limited success. Bethel-Thompson has been a practice squad player throughout his career, although he was on the Vikings 53 man roster for a few games in 2013. He has yet to appear in a regular season game.
