Cowboys News: Can Denver's run defense stop “Daylight Runner” Ezekiel Elliott?
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...ner-ezekiel-elliott-dak-prescott-jaylon-smith

...The Broncos had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL last season, allowing 130 yards per game on the ground. It looked like more of the same for Denver on the first running play Monday night. Chargers running back Melvin Gordon ran off left guard for 21 yards. But the Broncos clamped down, allowing only 43 yards on the final 21 carries.

Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys' offensive line will be a much tougher challenge. Elliott also has to be accounted for in the passing game. He caught a career-high five passes last weekend.

"We call him a daylight runner," Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods said. "He has great vision. He just runs to the daylight. He finds the hole. It's going to have to be a team defensive effort just in terms of gang-tackling and guys staying in their gaps to control him in the run game."...

Cowboys Need to Run the Damn Ball

Disclaimer: Scott Linehan has been and will continue to be an EXCELLENT offensive coordinator and play caller for the Dallas Cowboys. That being said it’s also well known that he had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the power running game scheme. His genes are in the passing game and when he gets’ excited, well, he runs home to pass-happy momma. By now everyone knows the narrative. First drive of the 2017 NFL Season. So close to the red zone you can reach out and touch it before the snap. Three plays. Three passes. Three whiffs. Field Goal.

SCREEEEEECH!!! …. Wait a moment!!! I thought the Cowboys were a power running team?!?!?

31 rushing plays. 4.2 yards per play average. 129 yards gained on the ground. 9 first downs on the ground. 34:14 minutes time of possession. All against a tough, scrappy NYG defense. And there’s the rub. The numbers don’t lie. The Cowboys are a power running team.

Red zone efficiency 1-4-25%...

Cowboys at Broncos
One would think a defense as nasty as the Denver Broncos new-age Orange Crush would counter the prolific Dallas Cowboys attack. However I don’t see that being the case this Sunday afternoon. The Broncos defense is awesome at stopping the pass but had big time issues stopping the run last season. Guess what the Cowboys do more often than not? Denver tried to address the issue by getting some beef up front in the offseason however look for Dallas to run the ball right at them behind their powerful offensive line and after they wear down the Denver D the passing game will eventual start to click off big plays via play-action.

Defend the run. The Broncos’ elite pass defense -- No. 1 in the league over the past two seasons -- will be a moot point if Denver cannot handle things on early downs against the Cowboys’ rushing attack. Against the Giants last Sunday night, the Cowboys had two scoring drives when New York didn’t even force them into a third-down play. The Cowboys were about 2 yards per carry better running to the offensive left against the Giants -- usually the weak side of the formation when they’re not using two tight ends -- so the Broncos likely can expect a test across the front. The key will be discipline in the pursuit, because when a defender leaves his gap to chase a play, Elliott usually finds that cutback opportunity. The Broncos spent plenty of time and money (via free agency) to repair their run defense, so this will be a stout early test...

That's the first time I've heard anyone talk about a RB as a Daylight runner... When I heard it I was like yea that's a great way to describe him.

Come on Zeke it's time to eat!

According to Linehan Dak changed the run play called to a pass play at line of scrimmage. Go Cowdoys

Last year, Zeke got over1,100 yards rushing...on first down alone.
Last year, the Broncos gave up over 1,000 yards rushing on first down.

And still allowed fewer points per drive than all but two teams, and fewer yards than all but one team.

And they paid in the off season to try and stop the run...good facts, Percy.

Today's Cowboys will be a stat breaker...

And this is the 1st time they will face our OL, Dak and Zeke.

Cowboys offense will be battle-tested after playing top-end NFL defenses
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...ter-playing-top-end-nfl-defenses-dak-prescott

...Interestingly, Dallas did out gain the Giants in 2016 588 to 576 yards of offense. That’s what makes good defense hard to beat. They don’t need to keep pace offensively if they can cause a holding call here or another mistake there. These types of defenses play well enough to keep you behind the chains. The Cowboys open up their season against three of the top-notch NFL defenses. You could argue that the Giants, Broncos, and Cardinals defenses are the best aspect of their respective teams.

This week’s opponent, the Denver Broncos, boast one of the best defenses in the league over the past few seasons. Led by Von Miller and the “No Fly Zone” (Aqib Talib, Chris Harris, Bradley Roby, and Justin Simmons), Denver relentlessly attacks opposing offenses. They’ll be missing starting defensive end Jared Crick but they’ll get after it in front of their home crowd. Adam Gotsis will play in his place where he was fourth on the team in tackles in week one.

They only allowed 18.6 points per game last year, making them fourth in points allowed. Only two teams got to 30 points on their defense, the Raiders and Chiefs (twice). Maybe Jason Garrett needs to get on the phone with Andy Reid before Sunday. The Broncos defense has shown that they can win games in spite of their offense. Just look at last week, they lost the turnover battle and gave up four sacks but still got the ‘W’...
