After a long week of work, you’ve earned a Saturday in front of the tube and a frosty beverage.
GAME OF THE WEEK- #2 Clemson @ #12 Virginia Tech- 7pm - ABC/Watch ESPN app
This is going to be a good one as the Tigers travel to face the Hokies. ESPN’s Gameday crew will be in attendance in Blacksburg for the first time in nearly ten years. Both teams have a lot to play for and the Hokies would love nothing more than to send the Tigers back to Death Valley with a loss.
“Both teams enter the game off to 4-0 starts. Clemson is up to No. 2 in both polls after early season wins against Auburn and at Louisville. The Tigers eventually pulled away from Boston College after a slow start for a 34-7 victory at home on Saturday.
Virginia Tech moved up one spot to 12th in both polls this week after notching its second shutout this season with a 38-0 win against ODU.
The Hokies haven’t played top-notch competition since topping West Virginia by a touchdown in the season opener at FedEx Field, but they’re on a roll.”
The Bulldogs are on the rise to the top of the SEC but they must put forth a good showing against the one-loss Volunteers. The home team knows how important this game will be as Tennessee is 3-1 but hasn’t looked good getting there:
“Tennessee is coming off two lackluster performances and swirling rumors about its head coach while Georgia comes in riding high already with two Top 25 wins.
The Vols are going to have to get something going offensively against a stout Georgia defense. John Kelly will likely need to have a game reminiscent of his performance at Florida to open up the offense and allow Quinten Dormady more open throwing lanes.”
If the Vols can’t get their offense going early, the Bulldogs will make this one a blowout before halftime.
Vanderbilt @ #21 Florida - 11:00am- ESPN
This matchup doesn’t look all that enticing unless you love defense. Vanderbilt may have been slaughtered by Alabama but this matchup smells like a defensive slugfest:
Gators wary of Vanderbilt rebound: Sure, the Commodores were steamrolled by the top-ranked Tide last weekend, but Jim McElwain notes that the scores of the last two Florida-Vanderbilt games were 9-7 and 13-6. And that those were both noon kicks - as is Saturday’s meeting.
“From the ‘Dores: That Alabama game was played with house money. Sure, Vandy got shot into the sun, then had the sun crushed between two larger, angrier suns, but that was the one loss we’d penciled in this season. Florida — especially after setting football back 45 years against Tennessee — looks vulnerable, the kind of team against whom the Vandy defense can feast.”
Last year the Commodores lost 13-6, the year prior 9-7 was the score in a game where it went like this after halftime: Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Gator Fumble, Punt, Gator FG, TO on Downs, GAME!
Superstar On The Rise- Indiana @ #4 Penn State - 2:30pm - BTN
To be honest, this game is all about Saquon Barkley and a Nittany Lions team on a roll. So much so, that our sister site The Crimson Quarry suggested a much-needed day off for the young man:
Barkley already has 518 rushing yards and 335 receiving yards on the season. Along with carving up a very stout Iowa defense, Barkley has also faced Akron, Pitt, and Georgia State this season - three opponents that are all approximately the same caliber and have been treated similarly by head coach James Franklin. Clearly, Barkley has been working very hard. And I believe that his hard work should be rewarded! And what better reward than taking next Saturday’s game off?!?
Nice try, Ben but it ain’t happening. The Hoosiers will play tough but this game only has one real ending...a big load of Barkley.
One Loss Wonders- #24 Mississippi State @ #13 Auburn -5:00pm - ESPN
Both teams are having a hard time convincing others that they are for real in the SEC. Before last week’s loss, the Bulldogs were #2 in the SEC rankings and Auburn was #8. Now, Auburn’s at #3 and Mississippi State is at #6, here’s Justin Strawn over at For Whom The Cowbell Tolls:
“Well that was ugly. Bulldogs have work to do in the receiving game if they are wanting to make 2017 one to remember.”
“Am I convinced about Auburn? No, but the Tigers did win easily, even if it was against a really bad team. But they looked better than almost anyone else who you could make an argument for to go here. As of right now, 3 through 9 is a jumbled mess and I am not really sure which team is better than the others at this point.”
Auburn should be favored in this one but I think these two teams may have one of the better games this week.
Heated Rivalry- Ole Miss @ #1 Alabama - 8:00pm- ESPN
The matchup between Alabama and Ole Miss is always a fun one because of how angry Nick Saban gets dealing with the Rebels. Funny Football happens when these two teams get together and who doesn’t love to see some ruffled feathers of folks who use “Roll Tide” as an adjective? Remember this play:

“We’re not going to make predictions on how Saturday’s contest will go down, because most of those predictions involve utter misery. Instead, we’re rooting for an Ole Miss showing that rattles Alabama and Saban for a littler longer than they feel comfortable. Like, a random two-possession Ole Miss lead to end the first quarter would be downright hysterical. The Rebs will blow that all apart, of course, because Bama is Bama, and Ole Miss is Ole Miss right now, but why not root for a weirdly impressive opening salvo on the part of the good guys.”
The weekend is here and you’ve earned a nice day in front of the television watching some good ol’ college ball!!! Besides, your Dallas Cowboys are but one day away!
