With speculation growing that Rico Gathers could wind up on injured eeserve, could the Cowboys go grab a familiar face for the time being?
By all measure, newest 53-man member of the Cowboys Rico Gathers looks like he can grow into a legitimate tight end in the NFL. Thankfully, the Dallas Cowboys invested in him when they had the opportunity to and will potentially reap the benefits of this.
Unfortunately though, the sense from within the Cowboys continues to grow that Rico Gathers could begin the season on injured reserve. Unlike Rico’s rookie year when he was on the team’s practice squad, a place on injured reserve protects him from being poached away by another NFL team. It’s the lone benefit of this situation.
If/when the Cowboys do place Rico on IR he’ll be theirs and that’s the main goal, but they’ll also be somewhat in need of help in the tight end group. Gold Jacket Jason Witten is awesome, but there’s a sense of hesitance with both James Hanna and Geoff Swaim considering they’re both coming off of season-ending injuries.
Considering Saturday’s roster moves from across the NFL, could the Cowboys look to bring in a familiar face? Potentially one that was just on the team a year ago? You know the name, and now Gavin Escobar is officially available.
#Chiefs informed TE Gavin Escobar that he's going to be released.

One of the worst things about Gavin Escobar during his time in Dallas was that he was never consistently used as a legitimate redzone weapon. We saw during the preseason that the Cowboys understand that that’s how Rico Gathers can really dominate, maybe they’ve learned their lesson and can do the same with Escobar while Rico heals up.
Of course it wasn’t just a lack of proper utilization that led to Escobar’s time in Dallas fully ending. Escobar struggled at times, but he also grew as a blocker in some ways (think back to his block that sprung Ezekiel Elliott for the game-winner in Pittsburgh).
If the Cowboys are in a pinch in terms of what they want to do at tight end while Rico Gathers heals up and they’re not fully satisfied in James Hanna or Geoff Swaim, why not pick up the phone and call a guy that knows their system?
What do you think? Is there any circumstance in which you’d want the Cowboys to bring back Gavin Escobar?
