In the National Football League, there is one group of guys who do their jobs in hopes of not being noticed, the long snappers. Finally, the one in Dallas gets noticed for the right reasons.
Since his Dallas Cowboys career began in 2005 no man on the team's roster has been better at his job than long snapper Louis-Phillipe Ladouceur. L. P. has been perfect on punts, on field goal, and on extra points. What has that earned him? Well, he has earned the respect of his teammates for one thing. Kicker Dan Bailey knows first hand how good his long snapper is, and how tough the position is.
"LP, he does a third of my job, it all starts with him and he's been doing it for a long time. I'm real lucky to have him. I put him up there with some of the best in the league and I have a lot of respect for what he does. He makes my job easier." - Dan Bailey
It may be a tough job, but it is also a thankless one. There are 32 long snappers in the NFL, but only the most diehard fans even know who handles this task for their favorite team. Here at Blogging The Boys we often give L. P. his due, but I would be willing to bet that if one of us went to AT&T Stadium wearing a jersey with the number 91 and the name Ladouceur on the back, most fans would have no idea that we were repping one of the Cowboys best players.
For a long snapper though, that is par for the course. The first thing that those who play the position have to do is store their ego in their pocket. The only time announcers call their name is if there is a bad snap on a kick. Even with 14 career tackles on special teams, L. P. doesn't seem to get his name called. Maybe that is because they struggle with pronouncing his name.
Now, after ten full seasons in the league, the man who never gets the recognition will have his brief moment in the limelight. For the first time in his career the former Notre Dame player is being singled out for some long overdue recognition.
Dallas Cowboys long snapper Louis-Philippe Ladouceur was added to the Pro Bowl roster Friday. It is 1st Pro Bowl selection of his career.
