A scouting report on the Cowboys seventh-round selection, Defensive Tackle from Florida, Joey Ivie

The Cowboys continued their commitment to strengthening their defense by adding an interior defensive lineman, Joey Ivie from Florida with the 228th overall pick. Overshadowed by his teammates on the defensive line, Ivie is a high-effort guy and played a key role in the success of Florida’s defense.

Dallas is already deep at defensive tackle with Maliek Collins having a great rookie season and Tyrone Crawford possibly moving back inside. The team has also added a couple of free agents over the last two off-seasons with Cedric Thornton and Stephen Paea. Plus, you never know what the team will do with David Irving. Ivie will have his work cut out for him as he works for a spot in the rotation, but if is work ethic is any indication, he’ll at least give himself a fighting chance.

He’s not going to be an All Pro type player, but he can be a piece to help the Cowboys sustain their top ranked run defense, allowing only 83 yards per game in 2016.

STRENGTHS

Plays with good motor and energy throughout the snap. Plays with flexibility and desired athleticism on the move. Punches into blockers with good placement. Locates the ball quickly and works off his block to tackle. Active as a pass rusher attacking both shoulders of the blocker. Plays with quick hands in his rush and uses arm over to get over the top.

WEAKNESSES

Lacks mass in his lower half. Attacks upfield with a narrow base and struggles to maintain balance through contact. Gets roughed up by double teams and combo blocks and pushed out of his gap. Doesn't feature upfield juice to consistently disrupt in the gaps. Relies on motor over power and explosiveness. Doesn't make many plays despite his activity. Short arms limits his ability to control at the point of attack.

Strengths

Worker bee and high effort player.

Displays a good series of pass rush moves including a nice bull rush and club move, doesn’t stop if the first action fails.

Shows good power and strength off the snap and is able to get inside leverage and get into the backfield.

Playing the run he shows good vision and ability to disengage from his blocker and make a tackle.

Weaknesses

Doesn’t consistently display the quick twitch off the snap he would need to be a starter.

Average athlete with decent chase speed, won’t be running Wentz, Wilson, or Rodgers down, though.

Labored in his lateral and turn movements.
