The Cowboys have decisions to make on their own free agents. We help make the choice for them.
As we move towards free agency, which begins on March 9, we’ll take a look at all the Cowboys current unrestricted free agents in effort to discern whether they will return or not. To start, we’ll take on a starter and one of the Cowboys most prominent free agents, Terrance Williams.
History
The Cowboys drafted Williams in the third round of the 2013 draft. Williams played college ball at Baylor and was immediately placed into the receiver rotation as a rookie.
Case For Re-signing
While Williams has gotten his fair share of condemnation, his overall numbers are not bad for a number two receiver. Over his four-year career he’s averaging just over 44 catches a year for roughly 700 yards and five touchdowns. His 15.8 yards per reception is an added bonus.
Williams has also been a healthy player, someone the Cowboys can count on being out there every week. He’s also a very good run blocker which is very important in the Cowboys run-heavy scheme.
Williams numbers may not blow you away but he plays on a team with a terrific tight end and an emerging slot player. When you combine that with how much the Cowboys like to run, there just aren’t a lot of footballs to go around. Williams also tends to run the deep routes, further limiting the amount of passes that come his way.
Case For Letting Him Go
Williams is known as a body catcher, something he’s never been able to get rid of, and it’s led to some excruciating drops. The latest was in the Cowboys playoff game against Green Bay. His catch percentage was better this year, but it has been an issue in previous seasons
Williams can also disappear for long stretches, in games and over a period of games. His worth tends to be tied to an occasional big play instead of a steady stream of plays.
His numbers this year in targets, yards and yards per reception were down. He might not be one of Dak Prescott’s favorites. Cole Beasley is definitely the new number two among receivers based on 2016.
Finally, NFL teams have been overpaying in free agency for number two receivers. It could very well happen again this year, driving Williams’ price up and making the decision for the Cowboys not to re-sign.
Summary
The Cowboys would like to have Williams back, but they are not going to overpay for him. If a bidding war breaks out or one team ponies up a large contract, expect Dallas to head to the draft for a replacement. They could also sign a veteran at a bargain price to complement a new draftee.
But, if the market doesn’t explode for Williams, the Cowboys will jump at the chance to bring him back.
