Another Dallas free agent may be priced out of the picture.

According to a report at Black and Blue Review, Dallas Cowboys free agent Barry Church is a target for the Carolina Panthers to acquire.

According to sources, the Panthers are expected to make a run at Barry Church, who will become a free agent when the new league year opens Thursday afternoon.

Church, who’s spent the first seven years of his career in Dallas, is one of nine Cowboys’ defenders set to hit the open market. He’s not much of a ballhawk – totaling just five career interceptions – but if the Panthers land Church, he could take over at strong safety, which would allow Kurt Coleman to move back to free safety.

Church was seen by many as an important player that the Cowboys should try and re-sign. He has been a solid if somewhat workmanlike part of the secondary, which is facing serious depletion as Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, and J.J. Wilcox are also free agents. Our own Danny Phantom had him pegged as a likely player for the Cowboys to try and bring back, but given the tight cap situation the Cowboys operate with each year (by design), any bidding at all will likely price him out of their range.

There is almost certainly going to be a mass exodus of free agents out of Dallas shortly. Fortunately in Church’s case, this year’s draft is seen as particularly rich in both safeties and cornerbacks, so the team has the opportunity to stock back up, and it also has Byron Jones, Kavon Frazier, and the GOAT Jeff Heath to build on.
