The Cowboys All-Pro left tackle will miss today’s practice.

When Tyron Smith missed yesterday’s Cowboys’ practice, that wasn’t much of an indicator of his status for Sunday. Smith has regularly missed the Wednesday practice each week as a precaution for his back. What he would do today, Thursday, was more indicative of his status. Unfortunately for Dallas, he won’t practice. But, Jason Garrett did give a little bit of positive news on him.

Jason Garrett said LT Tyron Smith (groin, back) had a good day Wednesday working on the side but he'll continue to work on the side again today and won't practice.

Having a good day on the side is at least something Cowboys fans can grasp on to in hopes that the big guy will be able to go on Sunday. If he can’t it looks like the Cowboys may give Byron Bell the first shot at replacing him this week. He was taking reps with the first team yesterday, so the Cowboys are at least considering going with him instead of Chaz Green.

“It’s a lot of pressure (replacing Smith), a future Hall of Famer and one of the best at his position,” Bell said. “We know we need Big T, but when he’s not up, it’s the next man up.”

He also is self-scouting.

“Where I get in trouble is when I play complacent and timid,” Bell said. “I’ve just got to go out there and cut it loose. If I’m going to lose, I’m going to lose my way. I just have to trust it and let it go.”

Dez Bryant is returning to practice today, but safety Jeff Heath is still out, as is Dan Bailey.
