The Cowboys lost in familiar fashion on Sunday night.
From the start the 2017 divisional playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and The Green Bay Packers looked eerily familiar. Like the two first two playoff contests between these two legendary franchises, the Dallas Cowboys had no early answers for the Packers offense. It seemed as though Aaron Rodgers and his high-powered offense were unstoppable. Just as the Vince Lombardi & Bart Starr-led squads had done during the NFL Championship games in the mid 1960’s, the Packers marched down the field and put points on the scoreboard at will.
In those two great contests the Cowboys were finally able to get things started and prevent Green Bay from turning the contests into blow outs. Jason Garrett’s charges were able to do the same. Through grit and determination they fought and scratched their way back into the contest. There was no quit from either side as the game clock continued its march toward zero.
Unfortunately fans of the blue and silver would ultimately see a similar ending to the way the two games from the 60’s came to a close. Much like Lombardi’s teams, Mike McCarthy’s bunch were able to persevere as time would down and will move one step closer to bringing the trophy named for their legendary head coach back to the city they represent.
The Dallas Cowboys will eventually look back on the 2016 season with a measure of pride, but also with thoughts of what might have been. Mental errors and a slow start served to hinder the team in its quest for a sixth championship. The sun will come out tomorrow, there will be bright days ahead for this franchise, but for now there is an empty void like the ones that came from those early losses the Coach Landry’s team suffered through. This squad, like Landry’s men five decades ago, still needs to learn how to win in the playoffs.
That day will come, but for now Cowboys fans know once again the hollow feeling of defeat.
