One of the under-discussed stories coming out of Sunday’s game with the Pittsburgh Steelers is the injury to tight end Geoff Swain. Playing behind Jason Witten, Swaim had proved to be an adept blocker in two- and three-tight end formations for the Cowboys. He has been placed on injured reserve after injuring his pectoral muscle that will require surgery. This is going to leave the Cowboys very thin at the tight end spot, with Gavin Escobar taking over Swaim’s snaps, and no one else behind him. James Hanna is still not ready to practice and the Cowboys chose to call up wide receiver Vince Mayle from the practice squad.
In the Steelers game, the Cowboys used reserve guard Joe Looney in some short-yardage situations, something they might choose to do going forward with jumbo sets instead of three tight ends. Although this would limit the flexibility of that package.
The good news from today’s practice was that Orlando Scandrick did participate after there were worries of a concussion after the Steelers game. Chaz Green also was back at practice today. Morris Claiborne and Barry Church were both still out, although Church was working on the side doing rehab drills. He will probably be back in a few weeks.
