Latest Cowboys headlines: Seven Cowboys made NFL Network's Top 100 Players list; why Cowboys' offseason mantra is 'Re-Commit'; early prediction of Cowboys’ 53-man roster.

Dallas Cowboys: NFL players rank Dak Prescott one of league's top 5 QBs, Tyron Smith game's top offensive lineman - Jon Machota, SportsDay
Seven Dallas Cowboys made NFL Network's Top 100 Players list of 2017, and the final two were revealed Monday night.

Dak Prescott was voted No. 14 overall by his peers. Tyron Smith came in at No. 18.

Travis Frederick (No. 87), Sean Lee (No. 79), Dez Bryant (No. 60) and Zack Martin (No. 58) have been revealed in previous shows.

Not only did Prescott come in among the top 20, he was the fifth overall quarterback on the list, putting him ahead of Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford and Cam Newton. To give you an idea of how much the list changes from year to year, Newton was ranked No. 1 overall a year ago. This year: 44.

The only quarterbacks ahead of Prescott: Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan and Derek Carr.

If Needed, Cowboys Have Confidence Backup QB Can "Move the Chains" - Jonathan Auping, Dallas Cowboys
The most important thing for a backup quarterback is to be ready when his name is called. Kellen Moore believes he's ready serve as the backup for Dak Prescott.

"I feel comfortable with it," Moore said. "Obviously I’m coming up on my third year here. I think I’ve reached that point where you’re pretty comfortable with the offense. You kind of know all the ins and outs."

Which Game Will Be The Litmus Test For The Cowboys In 2017? - R.J. Ochoa, Blogging The Boys
Every year there’s that one game where we find out who the team is... which game will it be this season?

There’s a perfect litmus test storm a-brewin’ and it’s happening at AT&T Stadium on October 8th when the Green Bay Packers come to town for the first time since defeating the Cowboys in the Divisional Round of the 2016 playoffs.

This is far and away the litmus test for the 2017 Cowboys. You’ve got the historic rivalry, we STILL owe them for the Dez Catch, last year’s playoff loss hurts our souls... plus there’s the fact that this is an insanely good football team.

Dallas Cowboys' offseason full of change for their defense - Todd Archer, ESPN
The Cowboys spent the offseason revamping their defense around a core of younger players who must make big strides quickly.

Offseason goals/grade: Coming off a 13-3 season, the Cowboys knew this would be an offseason marked by change on defense. They lost seven starters or key contributors to their defense in Barry Church, Brandon Carr, Terrell McClain, Morris Claiborne, J.J. Wilcox and Jack Crawford to free agency and did not make any major free-agent additions. The club’s reasoning was that it needed new blood for a defense that had been somewhat stagnant. They are hoping for improvement from Jaylon Smith (last year’s No. 2 pick who didn’t play as a rookie) and are banking on the growth of other young players. The Cowboys have altered their construction process in recent years, moving away from high-priced free agents and older players and focusing on developing players through the draft. With two division titles in three years, the plan seems to be working.

Dak Prescott, Dez Bryant, Jason Garrett explain why Cowboys' offseason mantra is 'Re-Commit' - Jon Machota, SportsDay
Several players and staff members have been seen around The Star wearing the navy blue shirts with "RE-COMMIT" written in white across the chest.

Prescott: "It's the mantra. It's what this team is about. Re-commit every day. We come in every morning, you know it's going to be a grind. We know we're going to have meetings, hot practices, but it's about the commitment to this team and to each other. It takes doing that, re-committing every day for us to get better and to get on that path to where we want to be. ... Re-commit's not just something in this locker room. You're recommitting to this team and to our goal every day. That's probably going to play more in hand going into this month off when we're not together. It's being committed to this team and being held accountable for everyone."

Scout’s Eye: Making An Early Prediction Of The Cowboys’ 53-Man Roster - Bryan Broaddus, Dallas Cowboys
There’s not a whole lot of action over this next month while we wait for training camp, so I Broaddus tried his hand at predicting the 53-man roster, and goes with 10 defensive backs.

I don’t have Robert Blanton making this team at safety, because I am willing to see what I have in Xavier Woods. If they rotate the position like they did last season, I believe that Woods will be fine. I do like what they have at cornerback, which is a nice mix of veterans and rookies. Awuzie and Lewis should contribute instantly with Awuzie maybe even seeing some time at safety like Byron Jones did. Anthony Brown should push Nolan Carroll for his job - - so keep an eye on that. Marquez White showed up during the minicamp but will likely be an inactive each week. I have no problem with that.

Making The Dallas Cowboys: A Good Training Camp Performance May Not Be Enough - Michael Sisemore, Blogging The Boys
No matter how they perform in camp, it may not be enough to snag a roster spot for some Cowboys.

Moore’s the perfect example but he’s not the only guy that could have issues staying off the bubble. The late-round picks like Marquez White, Jordan Carrell, Joey Ivie, and Noah Brown are up against the odds. You can make that same argument for veterans like Alfred Morris, Kyle Wilber, or Mark Nzeocha. Is Orlando Scandrick completely out of the woods yet?

Cowboys Rookies Will Get Back On The Field Days Before Training Camp - Rob Phillips, Dallas Cowboys
With preseason starting earlier than usual with the Aug. 3 Hall of Fame Game, the Cowboys are permitted to have their rookies in for on-field work at The Star in Frisco July 19-21.

"It really will be the same roster as a rookie camp," head coach Jason Garrett said last week. "What you’re allowed to do is bring true rookies in, then players with no accrued seasons, so all the guys that fit those categories will be here. You’re also allowed to bring some injured guys, so we’ll selectively choose those guys if we feel like they need some time."

QB Tony Romo's exit makes Jason Witten more reflective - Clarence E. Hill, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Tight end Jason Witten is "all in" going forward with Dallas, not thinking about retirement.

"Tony was the first one to say it to me: ‘Don’t allow my situation to get in the way of what was happening to this football team last year,’ " Witten said.

"As the off-season unfolded and he made the decision to join CBS, there is a day or two where you think, ‘Wow, look how quickly this has gone.’ I always think there is an appreciation of the guys you are able to do it with, and they are going on to new chapters in their life."

What's Jason Witten so busy writing about? Cowboys star reveals the story behind all his notebooks - Jori Epstein, SportsDay

There's a corner in an office in Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's house that overflows with notebooks. He's not sure quite how many they total, but he estimates he's filled a notebook every two or three games in his career.

"When it comes to football, it's pretty organized," Witten said Thursday from Cowboys minicamp at the Frisco Star. "I just think you can reflect on [the material]. That's part of our edge as veteran players is how we can draw on that, attack coverages.

"I definitely use those as tools for me to go back on."
