Latest Cowboys headlines: Commanders help the Cowboys out; what are the options at quarterback?

The Cowboys may not be giving fans a lot of reasons to celebrate, but don't let that stop you. Embrace the little things in life with a nice end zone dance!

There Seems To Be No End To This Nightmarish Season - Mickey Spagnola, The Mothership
In the words of Teddy "KGB", "It will all be over soon" because it just doesn't look like the Cowboys have the alligator blood needed to turn this thing around.

"I had a nightmare last night and I was hoping when I woke up this morning it was just that," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on his Friday morning radio show on 105.3 The Fan when confirming Romo’s hairline fracture that will not require surgery to repair, but at least another eight weeks to heal. "The reality of it is that was quite a turn of events out there yesterday."

I once had a dream I had lobster claws for hands. "First Take" with Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless was on the television and I couldn't work the remote to change the channel...because of my lobster claws. It was horrible.

Dallas Cowboys: Amazingly, Cowboys remain in NFC East hunt; Commanders beat Giants before hosting Dallas - Staff, SportsDay
Just when you thought we could put to rest all this "Dallas still has a shot at the playoffs" talk, the New York Giants lose again, leaving the door slightly cracked open. Tony Romo struggled on Thursday, throwing three interceptions, but Eli Manning threw three of his own on Sunday. It was the 20th time Eli has thrown at least three interceptions in a game.

Commanders Set Sights On Dallas Cowboys
Fans may not want to get suckered back into this way of thinking, but if the New York Jets beat the Giants on Sunday, then next Monday Night's matchup is going to become quite interesting.

The NFC East-leading Commanders on Dec. 7 play host to the Dallas Cowboys for a Monday Night Football matchup at FedExField. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.

The Five Game Evaluation For The Cowboys: Who Will Be The Backup Quarterback In 2016? - Tom Ryle, BTB

Nobody really wants to look at what life is without Tony Romo, but as this season has proven - it's something that needs serious consideration. How will Dallas improve their QB situation next season? Well, as Tom Ryle discusses, it could have a lot to do with what the team chooses to do over these next five weeks.

We all found out, to our dismay, just how dependent the team was on having Romo on the field, but we also found out just how important and poorly handled the backup job was. For the remainder of the depressing 2015 season, every offensive snap is also going to provide some valuable data to analyze with an eye to who will back Romo up next year.

Best of Bob Sturm: Replacing Tony Romo, Cowboys' biggest offseason mistake and more - Bob Sturm, SportsDay
Just how urgent will it be for the Cowboys to find Romo successor?

Question: Does finding a future quarterback now become the No. 1 off-season goal for this team?

Bob Sturm: Replacing Romo is probably not going to happen, but getting a plan in place as a massive insurance policy to go with Romo is. That could include a first-round pick or a better free agent -- much better than what they had this year with Brandon Weeden.

Best of Babe Laufenberg: What Cowboys need from 2016 draft, his stance on Greg Hardy and more - Babe Laufenberg, SportsDay
Laufenberg answers a few questions, including the idea of giving the kid a chance.

Question: What should the Cowboys do in the final month of the season to best prepare them for next season?

Laufenberg: Once you are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, I would like to see Kellen Moore get a few starts at quarterback. Find out about him. Sure, there are negatives with his size and arm strength, but if you have him on your roster, let's find out about him. He had a prolific college career, and was a player who I thought handled his team's offense as well as any QB this side of Andrew Luck. I am a firm believer in not overlooking productivity, and he was one of the most productive QBs in college football history. Can he be your backup for you next year that can win games? I don't have that answer. But let's find out.

Don’t Forget About These 5: Unable To Land Turnovers; Failed Quick Screen - Nick Eatmon, The Mothership
I'm all for getting Gavin Escobar more involved, but they should probably find a different way than screen passes.

Quick screen to Escobar – That alone just doesn’t sound right. And it didn’t look right, either. Nothing about that call or execution was right for the Cowboys and it turned out to be a big momentum-crusher for the Cowboys, who had just stopped the Panthers and grabbed great field position to start the half. Desperately needing a touchdown to trim into the 23-3 lead, the Cowboys had a third-and-3 from the Carolina 28. Romo’s quick screen to Escobar was sniffed out from the start and the Panthers dropped him for a 2-yard loss. The Cowboys had to settle for a field goal and still trailed 23-6.

Kuechly explains his unlikely deep coverage of Dez - Mike Florio, ProFootballTalk
The Panthers defense was outstanding with their coverage scheme, but it is very impressive when a linebacker was able to help keep Dez out of the end zone.

"We were playing in [zone] coverage and the play got extended and I saw him kind of turn it up so I just chased him down there and I figured if no one’s on him, I better cover him," Kuechly said on Friday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio. "So I just tried to do my best, tried to run down there with him and luckily I was able to get close enough to him where I could bump him out of bounds."

Which Cowboys are here 10-plus years? - Bob Sturm, SportsDay
The Cowboys will face many tough free agent decisions this off season, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Morris Claiborne, Rolando McClain, and Greg Hardy all have made some key plays for the team this season. Bob Sturm is in the dark when trying to determine if the Kraken has done enough to be wearing the star next season.

I was listening to the show today, and wanted to know what your thoughts on Greg Hardy are as far as him being on the team for the rest of the season and next year?

Great topic. I think a lot has yet to be determined. You can absolutely look at this from 10 directions. Is he a great player? Yes. Is he going to be expensive? Yes. As expensive as it seemed at first? No. Is he really a ton of trouble behind the scenes? I don't know. I just don't know if he is back. If they go 9-7 and he ends up with 10 sacks? Sure. If they go 6-10 and he ends up with 6? Doubtful. Sorry, I just have no feel for this one.

How Cowboys' pass combo of Romo, Bryant compares to Aikman, Irvin - Babe Laufenberg, SportsDay
Tony Romo and Dez Bryant recently passed Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin as the Cowboys all-time leaders in touchdown connections with 50. How does the Romo/Bryant duo compare to Aikman/Irvin? Babe gives us his take on this tough question.

How would you compare the Aikman/Irvin connection with Romo/Bryant?

Great question. The similarities between #9 and #8 is how accurate they are. Really precision passers. I actually think that Romo's accuracy gets overlooked. Did you know that Romo has set the NFL record of 20 consecutive games (and counting) of completing 60% of his passes? You know how hard it is because no one has ever done it before. As for the two 88s- Dez is the more physically gifted receiver, Michael the better route runner. But the one characteristic that both have is they love to compete. Live for it.

Which Cowboys positional group is the most disappointing? - Steven Mullenax, The Landry Hat
Well, there are plenty of groups to choose from, but Steven Mullenax is disappointed with the QB position and points the finger at Jerry Jones.

The blame lays directly at the feet of owner and general manger Jerry Jones, who still believes he was somehow responsible for the Cowboys early Super Bowl success in the 1990’s. Still trying to prove he’s better than former head coach Jimmy Johnson, all Jones has proven this season is he likely had very little to do with the Cowboys success in 2014, and he should be stripped of that Executive of the Year award.
