Latest Cowboys headlines: Scandrick ready to return better than ever; Cowboys will ease into training camp practices; Tight ends getting looks.
Cowboys united with Dallas, police, families of fallen officers - Clarence Hill, The Star-Telegram
The Cowboys escorted Chief David Brown, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and family members affected by the sniper attack in Dallas onto the field on opening day of training camp.
Mayor Mike Rawlings, police Chief David Brown, two council members along with the families of four of the five officers gunned down in the recent shooting in downtown Dallas walked out on the practice fields at the team’s River Ridge training complex arm in arm with the players, coaches and owner Jerry Jones.
They formed a circle on the field, had a moment of silence for the slain officers. Rawlings, Brown and coach Jason Garrett spoke to the players as part of what they hope will be seminal moment for the city in its effort to move past the horrific tragedy.
More mature and stable, Cowboys' Scandrick ready to return better than ever - Clarence Hill, Miami Herald
Hill details Orlando Scandrick's struggles on and off the field as Scandrick worked to return from an injury that cost him the entire 2015 season.
"I'm ready to go," Scandrick said. "I'm going to be smart and work myself back into this. But I'm 100 percent and I feel fantastic. There are no restrictions. My confidence is there. Everything I was able to do before, whether it was in the weight room or on the field, I have done it. I have done it at a better rate. I have done it at a higher efficiency. This season is my most important season. It is something I put a lot of work into. It's been a long, long, long road. I'm excited about our team. I'm excited about going to training camp."
Owner Jerry Jones compared Scandrick's motivation to that of Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin.
"Orlando Scandrick was a real vital part and is part of our defense," Jones said. "It hurt us last year not to have him. It will help us probably even more so this year. Usually players like him and Michael Irvin, if they had a setback like that and they can physically get back, they are more driven than before. He is a leader on the team."
Scout's Notebook: Surprising Lineup Shuffles, More - Bryan Broaddus, Dallas Cowboys
Broaddus delivers the goods as usual, and his camp summary is an easy must-read. One of the many observations from the Broad One:
I wonder if we are going to see this trend continue or if it is just the way this practice went, but Kellen Moore loves to throw the ball to the tight ends. Gavin Escobar and Geoff Swaim did a nice job of getting open on several snaps for good gains and Moore put the ball right on them. On a side note, Escobar is moving better than he was pre-injury. There is some flow to his game without the stiffness or tightness we’ve seen in the past.
Wilson Patiently Awaiting Practice Clearance After Paintball Eye Injury - Rob Phillips, Dallas Cowboys
Wilson explained how he injured his eye two weeks ago:
He had already been eliminated from a paintball game, took off his protective helmet and accidentally got struck in the eye by a stray paintball.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones estimated Wilson could return to practice in approximately 10 days barring any complications.
"We really felt great about the offseason Damien had at that "Mike" position as well," Jones said. "It’s a shame he got a little injury there but hopefully he’ll be back in short order."
Cowboys will ease into training camp practice - Todd Archer, ESPN
The Cowboys are easing their players into camp, and it won't be until Monday before offense and defense play against each other.
Coach Jason Garrett moved to this schedule a few years ago to make sure players were acclimated to football before they moved into full-speed drills.
"We have this offseason program with the guys where we build up to having nine [organized team activity] practices and three minicamp practices and then the players are away," Garrett said. "They're gone for five weeks. And our guys are working out. They work out together. They get themselves ready, but they haven't been playing football against another NFL player. We just think it's in the best interests to be deliberate when we start camp and let them get their football feet, their football legs underneath them."
"We'll get the pads on on Monday," Garrett said, "and we'll get after each other a little bit."
Cowboys left to scramble for pass rush help - Lorenzo Reyes, The Shreveport Times
Reyes opines that the team’s fate may very well come down to how its defense holds up.
It all starts with the pass rush, and the Cowboys are now relying on young and inexperienced players to step up.
"I think we have healthy competition in the defensive line," coach Jason Garrett said. "I think that will bring out the best in those guys. They go against really good offensive linemen every day, so they will be ready to go. The culture will be right. The environment will be right for them to do that.
"Having said that, there’s a lot of guys out there who don’t have much experience playing at this level. But my experience has been that if they’re the right environment, they’re the right kind of guy, and they have some talent, they will grow and they will grow quickly, and we’ll give them a chance to do that."
