The Cowboys and Packers play a big one Sunday afternoon.
For all of the Dallas Cowboys injury worries heading into their game on Sunday, it may be the Green Bay Packers that have the biggest issue. Their running back situation is very unsettled, and could lead to a couple of wide receivers taking snaps in the backfield.
Eddie Lacy is designated as questionable for the game after suffering an ankle sprain last week. He has managed limited practices this week. His backup, James Starks, has been ruled out and is likely to miss a few weeks. Presuming Lacy does play, how many snaps he can take and how effective he can be is still in question. The Packers backup plan relies on wide receivers Randle Cobb and Ty Montgomery.
When Cobb was asked whether he and Montgomery need to be on high alert for RB duty this week, he said: "Possibly."
"Honestly, I feel like we've always got to be ready," Montgomery said. "I know I'm giving you a generic answer, but we've always got to be ready because you never know what could happen."
The Packers rushing attack has been a key element to their offense this season with Aaron Rodgers currently mired in a slump. They rank 12th in yards rushing per game. How much they have of it on Sunday is in question.
Green Bay will also get back a couple of players who were suspended for four games to start the season. Defensive tackle Mike Pennel and corneback Demetri Goodson were activated on Saturday. Pennel is a solid rotation guy along the line and Goodson could help with a very banged-up Packers secondary.
The Cowboys are dealing with the Tyron Smith situation, leading to some uncertainty about the offensive line. Smith says he is ready to play, but with bulging disk injuries, you never know when they can flare up enough to sideline the left tackle. If he’s out, the Cowboys will have to flip Doug Free to the left side, slide Zack Martin out to the right tackle and insert Joe Looney as right guard. Needless to say avoiding that shuffling of the line is very important.
Who will be inactive for the Cowboys? As of right now, if Tyron Smith is going to play, it would probably be Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Orlando Scandrick, Lance Dunbar, Chaz Green, Kyle Wilber and most likely Darius Jackson.
