The Cowboys make some roster moves on their practice squad.
When the Cowboys added QB Jameill Showers to the practice squad yesterday, they upped the number of players on the 10-man practice squad to eight players. Leaving to spots empty on the practice squad was a clear indication that further roster moves would be forthcoming.
What wasn't expected was that just three days after signing seven players to their practice squad on Sunday, they would release two of them again. Linebacker Deon King and defensive end Ryan Russell lasted just three days on the practice squad, and since nobody picked either player up on the waiver wire on Sunday, it's unlikely that they'll be claimed this time around. Instead, once they clear waivers, both players will look to find a spot on a practice squad somewhere.
Releasing King and Russel left the Cowboys with four empty spots on the practice squad, and they promptly filled three of those spots with the following players:
Jeremiah George, MLB, Iowa State: George was drafted by the Jets in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. he didn't make the 53-man roster out of camp that year, and the Jets signed him to their practice squad. The Jaguars signed him off the Jets' practice squad a few weeks later, but also released him a year later during final roster cuts after camp in 2015. The Buccaneers then claimed him off waivers and and eventually signed him to a one-year deal as an ERFA in April. They released him during their recent roster cuts. While in Tampa, George made his biggest impact on special teams in 2015, contributing six kick-coverage stops.
George has played in 21 regular-season games with the Jags and Bucs, playing 11 defensive snaps and 339 special teams snaps in two years, solidifying a reputation as a solid special teams player but a raw linebacker. His special teams play is what has kept him employed, his linebacker play has kept getting him cut (and playing for three different teams in two years hasn't exactly helped with that).
DE Zach Moore, Concordia: Moore was a sixth-round pick for the Patriots in 2014 and won a Super Bowl with the team in 2014, even if he didn't play in any playoff game. Moore was waived during final roster cuts in 2015 by the Patriots, and was claimed off waivers by the Vikings, who eventually released him during final roster cuts on Saturday. Moore played in eight games for the Patriots and one game for the Vikings.
His release by the Vikings was felt to be a bit of a surprise, according to SB Nation Vikings site, Daily Norseman:
Moore was thought to be a candidate to crack the roster at defensive end, but it doesn’t appear that the coaching staff saw things the same way. He picked up six combined tackles and one sack during preseason play in 2016. He might be a candidate to come back to the practice squad again, but he seems like a guy that might be able to help a team that needs depth at the defensive end position.
OT Keavon Milton Louisiana Monroe: The Cowboys are Milton's fifth NFL team since he signed with the Saints in 2013 as a UDFA, and he won a ring with the Seahawks along the way. He was last signed by the Patriots in November 2015 and was released ruing the cuts to the 75-man roster by the Patriots last week. The 26-year old offensive lineman was a longshot to make the team in New England, and an injury to right tackle Sebastian Vollmer didn't help Milton move up from the bottom of the Patriots’ offensive tackle depth chart.
He played eight of his nine NFL games for Cleveland in 2013, mostly on special teams and as a blocking tight end. Perhaps the Cowboys are looking at him in a similar role.
None of these guys are a sure thing, far from it, and the Cowboys could end up releasing them again in a few days after kickin' their tires. But Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells had a saying: The 53rd man is going to win you a game or lose you a game at some point this season.
Maybe one of these guys will be that guy this year.
