The blue-collar wide receiver turns in another solid day of work and he continues to pace all Dallas receivers.
Does anyone remember that undrafted wide receiver from 2012 who packed up his bags and went home from Oxnard during Cowboys training camp? I think his name was Cole Beasley.
It seems hard to believe now, but back then there were many people who felt that the Dallas Cowboys should not have reached out to Cole and persuaded him to return to the club. One of the things that stands out in my mind now is the plethora of comments about a "Right Kind of Guy" would not walk away from a shot at making an NFL club. I don't know about all of that, but Bease has certainly been the right kind of guy for Dak Prescott this season.
Through four games this season, Cole is the Cowboys top receiver with 23 catches for 279 yards. He, along with Jason Witten, is a guy that the Dallas quarterback looks for on a consistent basis. At the rate he is going right now, he will eclipse the 1,000 yard mark for the first time in his career. Beasley has yet to find the end zone in 2016 but that should change as Prescott continues to feed him the ball. It is only a matter of time before he finds pay dirt.
Against the San Francisco 49ers, Cole had another outstanding performance. With Dez Bryant out of action he drew a little more attention than what he normally does from opposing defenses. Regardless #11 still led all Dallas receivers with 66 yards on three catches. The bulk of that came on the last meaningful play of the game when he picked up 47 yards on a bubble screen to secure the first down that insured that the 49ers would not have a last ditch effort to rally.
What is more impressive is the way that Beasley gets involved when he is not the primary target for his quarterback. On running plays you can see the diminutive receiver working just as hard to make his blocks downfield as the offensive line does in the trenches. When it is a fellow receiver who is targeted, Cole does his best to draw coverage away from the primary receiver and then to set a block which will hopefully free his teammate for a big gain.
Cole Beasley has become the hard-working, blue-collar member of Dallas' wide receiver corps, and it is nice to see him getting his turn in the spotlight. Most refreshing is to see that opposing defensive coordinators like San Francisco's Jim O'Neil giving him the respect of devoting extra attention to shutting down his efforts and then having him still deliver at a critical juncture. That is the mark of someone who is proving that he is one of the most valued members of a talented offensive unit, and Cole continues to get better as time passes.
