Who’s hot and who’s not during the latest training camp action for the Dallas Cowboys.

The first week of training camp has concluded. The Cowboys still have a couple more practices before they head out to Canton, Ohio on Thursday to take on the Arizona Cardinals. The action has been in full swing over the last couple days.

Here is the latest stock report.

Byron Jones

The improvement being seen in the Cowboys secondary is something we should get used to because we are hearing more and more about it. Chidobe Awuzie is tearing it up so far, but there is another young DB that wants to remind everyone that he’s the leader of this pack.

Jones is entering his third year with the team and second at the starting free safety position. His patented pass break ups are still very much alive during camp, but he’s working really hard in trying to come down with some of these passes.

“I did a decent job tackling, did a good job covering, but now I want to start making those big plays and interceptions,” Jones said. “We, as a unit, want to create more turnovers. When the ball is in the air, it’s as much the defense’s ball as the offense’s ball. So when the ball is in the air, it’s our mentality to go get it.”

And on Saturday, he had the play of the day.

Jones recently spent time with the Frisco Rough Riders baseball team to help work on his eye and hand coordination. It appears to be working. Maybe he can finally put those impressive jumping skills to good use.

I told people, Brice Butler is our 2nd or 3rd best WR.....

Behind Dez and maybe Bease.

Williams might be a number 4 after TC or 5. Where he should be

He may push Twill, but Beasley has an entire different role than Twill and Butler. #2 WR doesn't mean he has to have the 2nd most receptions.
However, ever since Butler came here, people have been saying this, including myself on occasion.

Butler was supposedly looking real good in last years TC also. I like him, but like other players, will we keep waiting for that breakout?
I would still keep an eye on Noah Brown to push Butler. However, as much as I want Brown to make the 53, and he is my pet cat. I still give the edge to Butler, as he knows the system and playbook better, or he should. Brown is still a little raw to quite a few things. But that comes in time for most, like 95% of WR's coming into the NFL.

I also feel we need Butler, and Brown can sit and learn. but need to find a way to keep Noah.

This is year 5 and he has yet to break 300 yards receiving for a season. He is 27 years old.

If he <is> going to break out and become anything but a journeyman type WR, this has to be the year he does it.
He hasn't reached 300 yards receiving in 5 years. That says it all. And then on top of that, Bad penalties and the ball goes through his hands. I would love to see him take advantage of his speed and his size, I just don't see it happening.

I never understood the Butler hate. And all the chatter that Noah Brown was going to beat him out was peculiar to me. Butler is a very good backup WR. He does some boneheaded things at times, that's for sure, but as a 4th or 5th WR, he's definitely quality.

Noah may not play well enough to make the team yet. If he does, how often have we kept 6 WR? If you've got the talent, WR is usually smart to go long on. Price, injury, passing league, etc

To OP, been a fan of Byron since the draft. They don't throw all those positions at you if you aren't smart. He does need to assert himself a little more, but this is third year. I expect him to do pretty well. Managing expectations but he could have a great year.

Awuzie is going to ball out. I tried to tell y'all. I loved this pick.

If Jaylon Smith is healed going into the season, we completely hit the jackpot. I may have to get a jersey.

Lol what's up with Paea? This isn't the first time I've read about him winning some good battles. Could be an underrated signing.

Not worried about Taco. Marquez White is interesting. Rico getting frustrated, at least he cares.

La'el Collins... Pretty much what everyone was talking about when they saw him being a better NFL G than Tackle. Way too early to conclude anything, but his weakness is space. I thought he was pretty much a lock for at least a Brian Waters career at G. I just don't know if he's going to be *that* at Tackle.

Nice surprise to keep hearing about Paea.

Not surprised that Rico is all hype and no game.

Not surprised that Rico is all hype and no game.

They were reporting that Rico still looks stiff in his assignments.
That he looked great in running the scouting teams, as you are assigned a certain play, and that is what you run. You do not have to adjust.
Now in TC you need to adjust and think what to do, so that mental aspect of it is him going through the learning part. Jason even said this to reporters supposedly.
So he is still raw from that aspect.

I would not say all hype and no game. But it seems he is not where most fans seem to have him at.
right now, I still see a PS player, unless they really feel that strongly about not losing him. But I prefer they keep Noah Brown for that over Rico at this point.

Last preseason, he looked like the worst blocker in the history of the NFL. It looked comical.

I hope he learns the game, but I'm not optimistic he will.

I think since Byron not having teammates to make up for in the backfield plays a part in his improvement. That, along with all the hard work he did in the offseason to improve his ball skills has apparently helped his game as well.

Kind of what I was expecting last summer. He disappointed me last year. It sounds like he has worked to make himself better. Now it is starting to show and he look prepared to make the jump into a bigger contributor.

So I'm supposed to forgive him for not covering Jared Cook and ruining our season last year because he's had a couple good practices?

Agreed -- I think the intensity of the competition at WR has spurred Mr. Butler on to new and better things. Great to see!

If he keeps up the good work, would it make any difference to you? Was that the only play that decided that game? Seems to me that it was some miraculous play by both Rodgers and Cook. It also seems to me the failure of the refs to call a holding penalty on the guy that tackled Irving had an effect as well.

That was last season. Time to get over it. He might make the play to win it this time. No need to hold grudges.......by the way that one play didn't ruin our season

Im with you here. I thought he did pretty well last year in absence of Bryant.

Can't take this piece seriously when every member of the team is on the up and up and one guy is cooling down

I can still be excited about this season while having a bad taste in my mouth about the way last season ended. It's not that I'm not hopeful we can't do better, but I've watched us be one of the top 2-3 tears 2 out of the last three years with nothing to show for it.
