In the second installment of my weekly mock draft series it's a seven-round mock for the Cowboys. Do the Cowboys go heavy on defense?
In the upcoming NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys will have seven selections. The sixth round will be the only round the Cowboys won't have a selection due to their trade with Baltimore for Rolando McClain. The Cowboys have several holes that will need to be filled. No trades were part of this mock draft so the picks were made based on what the draft order is currently.
Round One
Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
There are plenty of questions regarding Peters but he is the top cornerback in the class that will slide because of his character concerns. There is a possibility that Sterling Moore and Brandon Carr could both be looking for work elsewhere which would leave a vacancy in the secondary. Peters could be a day one starter. The Cowboys need to desperately address this position via free agency and/or the NFL draft.
Round Two
Daryl Williams, OT, Oklahoma
In the last four seasons the Cowboys have shown they aren't shy about taking an offensive linemen early on in the draft. Not the first round here but it has been a trend since Jason Garrett took over as head coach. Williams could fill the void left by Doug Free or Jermey Parnell if the Cowboys want to move on. The most likely scenario involves either Free or Parnell returning. Free seems more likely to play elsewhere due to his level of play and the amount he will command in free agency. Williams is very physical and would fit in nicely next to All-Pro guard Zack Martin down the road.
Round Three
David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa
In this case, I'm assuming the departure of DeMarco Murray given the amount a running back will would be seeking because of the season he just had. The Cowboys will need to find someone to fill the void. Johnson put his name on many scouts radar with his performance at the Senior Bowl. He is a hard-nosed runner who can prove to be difficult to take down at times. Arm tackles will not work with him and Johnson is also a good receiver who can also line up all over the field. A great fit to replace their former third-round pick at running back.
Round Four
Cedric Reed, DE, Texas
When the 2014 season began Reed was going to be a top many boards however a disappointing season and surgery after the season ended will cause him to slide down. Reed wins getting off the bus. He has the size and length that you want in an edge rusher. He plays outside contain well and is great at fighting with his hands. Marinelli could work his magic with this kid to bring him back to what many expected to see from him this season.
Round Five
Xavier Williams, DT, Northern Iowa
The second selection from Northern Iowa in three rounds. Williams is a big body who can be plugged in at the one-technique defensive tackle. Williams has tremendous strength and uses his leverage to his advantage. You should expect nothing less from a former wrestler. He will eat up blocks to allow linebackers to step up and his motor is unmatched.
Round Seven
Pick One
Devante Davis, WR, UNLV
Davis has great size standing in at 6'3". He adjusts to the ball well and plays with good body control. Davis will struggle with press coverage but he doesn't drop the football due to a lack of focus. Good weapon as a fourth or fifth receiver. Davis would take over the role if Dwayne Harris isn't a part of this roster in 2015.
Pick Two
Damian Swann, CB, Georgia
Swann plays aggressive and he isn't afraid to get involved with the run game. Swann has quickness and closing poses no issue for him. He will contribute on special teams and can work his way into dime packages. That might be the extent of his NFL career but you can't ask much more of a seventh round pick.
