Scott Linehan and Rod Marinelli get some contract work done.
The Dallas Cowboys have extended the contracts of their two top assistants, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. It’s no surprise that this was done as the Cowboys have expressed interest in extending their coordinators deals that would have expired after the 2017 season. Clarence Hill, from the Star-Telegram, was the first to report it:

Both Rod Marinelli and Scott Linehan have been fixtures in the Cowboys’ organization for a few years.
Linehan has been instrumental in turning the Cowboys’ offense into a lethal dose of poison for most defensive coordinators to handle. The Cowboys’ offense had the league’s leading rusher twice in the last three seasons under Linehan. In 2016, the Cowboys’ offense ranked fifth in points per game, fifth in yards per game, and second in rushing yards per game. Overall, Linehan helped the Cowboys rank fifth overall in total offense.
Marinelli had the harder task as most of the Cowboys’ talent does lay on the offensive side of the ball. Still, Marinelli was able to create the league’s best rushing defense. They ranked fifth in points allowed per game (19.1), 14th in yards per game (343.9), 26th in passing yards allowed per game (260.4). Marinelli was able to produce a jump to 13th in the NFL with 36 sacks in 2016, up from 25th the year prior. The Cowboys’ defense also improved to 20 takeaways from the 11 they had the year prior. Overall, Marinelli’s defense ranked 14th in the league.
It’s undisclosed what the details of the contracts are but these are pivotal extensions for the Dallas Cowboys who have become a pillar of continuity as of late. Jerry Jones doesn’t get into bidding wars for free agents anymore but with no salary cap for coaches, you can bet he’s not going to lose out on guys he wants to keep. Linehan’s contract has been extended through 2019, the details of Marinelli’s extension are not disclosed yet.
This brings back all the coordinators and assistant coaches for the Cowboys in 2017 with the exception of Mike Pope, the tight ends coach, who has retired. Steve Loney, his assistant, will take over those duties.
