Secondary Coach: "We've All Got a Point to Prove" | Scott Crisp, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson says his group is entering the 2014 season with a massive chip on their collective shoulders.

"I think we’ve all got a point to prove," Henderson told the team’s official website. "You know, last year wasn’t a good year for us on defense statistically, so we all have a point to prove and we’ve got to come out every day and prove it to ourselves first, so opening day we can go out and have better results than last year."

"Nobody wants to look at last year and take ownership of that, but we have to," he said. "We’ve got to get better from there and we cannot let that happen again."

Is Tony Romo the Most Underrated Dallas Cowboy? - Blogging The Boys
Pete Prisco of CBSSports looks at the most underrated and overrated player for each of the NFL's 32 franchises, and concludes that Tony Romo is the most underrated player on the Cowboys roster, maybe even the league.

Underrated: QB Tony Romo -- Yes, Romo. Without him, the Cowboys stink. And let's please stop the narrative that he's bad in the fourth quarter. He was really good in that quarter last season.

So who is this year's most underrated player? I wanted to pick Dallas quarterback Tony Romo (I mean it), but decided against it because the player I did pick [Seattle defensive tackle Brandon Mebane] has never been to the Pro Bowl, and that's a shame.

Although the Cowboys offensive guard has a trial date set, reports are that the NFL will not force him to sit out any games.

Learning The Defense: Why The Dallas Cowboys Defense Should Improve In 2014 - Blogging The Boys
We've all asked it; how can our defense function if it's always changing? Familiarity with scheme, not new players, should have the Cowboys seeing a big improvement on defense in 2014.

Bryant Describes How He's Becoming A Better Pro - Rowan Kavner, DC.com
For Bryant, there are two distinct parts to becoming a better pro. One is about technique and improving as a player. The other is about understanding what it takes to be a professional.

On improving as a player: "Coming quicker off the ball, being at the correct depth, being patient on your routes," Bryant said. "Just because it’s open in a certain coverage – not giving too much details – but not taking the bait, finishing the whole route and executing that play the best way I possibly can."

On being professional: "I wasn’t understanding the whole process of how to be a professional player," Bryant said. "As time went on, I started learning little by little and it all came together and still is."

Cowboys resurrecting the fullback position | Brian Gosset, Star-Telegram
Interesting factoid: Both Tyler Clutts and J. C. Copeland were defensive ends before moving to fullback, something that should help re-establish the position on the Cowboys' roster.

"It’s a physical position. You can’t hesitate, a lot of contact. The best fullbacks in the game can accelerate through contact. Defensive ends have the same mentality, you have to be fast and play explosive and aggressive," Clutts said.

"You go out there and put your body out on the line for your running back, your quarterback and the team. There’s very little glory involved in that position, so you really have to love the game," Clutts said. "I love the game. I love being out there, being a part of it, love helping others be successful."

The bolded part is what some seem to fail to understand when they blame Romo for interceptions that are actually the fault of the receiver. Defenses by design try to bait receivers into running into coverage. They want them to see one thing while the defense is actually doing another, because, of course, it leads to interceptions. Dez showed real grwoth in that regard last season and Terrence Williams wasn't too bad about taking the bait, which is one reason Romo's interception total went down dramatically. We saw the same thing on the interception that Romo threw on a simple sideline route to Cole Beasley. Beasley took the bait instead of finishing the whole route, which took him off the same page as his quarterback.

Hopefully, we'll see more improvement in that area, which will lead to a well-oiled passing attack to go with (cross your fingers) and more powerful and effective running game. If so, the sky is the limit with this offense.

Yes, just like last year, and the year before that, and also that 1 year.

Then there were injuries right? Yeah that's it.

Let's face it, we haven't seen a dominate defense for more than 6 games in a season in the past 6 years. At least we have seen a dominate offense, and that's where my hope rests at.

We will always be average at best on defense, let's just hope the year we decide to be consistently average, we get that crucial offense going. With Scott I think we can be that.

Our Offense Led by Dez is the only thing that will carry us. We will never be the seahawks, ravens or 9ers or the giants the years they won Superbowls

Is this the 'always' as used until the end of time or some other 'always'?

lol That was good! Posters like him think a team, be it football or a SEAL team, is static, as in same ole same ole, which is not the case. Teams are built to be dynamic, meaning that change is always going to happen, regardless.

The Offense looks to be changing for the better, with or without Romo in the future, and the defense is now getting the priory for getting fixed. And, I do believe that the defense, young guys and all, may surprise some people. Pride is one hell of a motivator!

According to a few above, it does not matter.

Let's just pretend it is never said, and this year, just like all the others will finally be the year.

Well, you do keep working to change that and hope that work pays off. It's why you hire a different coordinator. It's why you let players go and bring in new players. Etc.

The team should go into every year wanting to take a step forward, wanting to prove itself. Would you rather they say we're going to suck and we know it, so why bother?

At this point in time, they should have a massive chip on their shoulder. It doesn't mean they are going to be better, just that they recognize the need to do it and are trying to do it.

This next step coming up with this team is Pride. Young pride...Dallas Cowboys. They might lose games, but the other team is going to feel their hurt. Defend the Star.

I do believe that on this defense there are very few, if any, players who have any reason to feel they can rest on their laurels. Every player who enters a game for Dallas should be hungry to prove that he belongs in it.

The closest we might have to a proven vet is Carr, and his play last year left him with a lot to prove also. None of them can afford to be lazy because they simply haven't been good enough to know their jobs are secure. Few can even say they are locks to start (Church, Melton, Carr?).

Not saying that's a good thing because it means we have few proven studs on defense. Just saying a hungry defense can sometimes exceed expectations.

I do not think that sense of pride exists anymore. And I am not speaking specifically about the Cowboys.

I do not think a lot of players get hurt when they lose anymore. As long as they are getting paid or are individually successful, the majority are not devastated by losses or use them as fuel.

Well, we know that Jerry is going to pay the bill. And, it seems that the money is getting straightened out...no thanks to the Commissioner!

The Cowboys are trying to use their money smart. A problem in Dallas is the culture, the glamour, the "look at me...hate me". I think the Cowboys got some young talent on defense to go along with the young guys on offense, along with the vets. Sort of a culture change.

WE have taken the moniker "Next Years Champs" some people will just reject it til we win and than just say "See, told you" But for the past decade or more this Dallas Cowboys is the
"Next Years Champs" Its just what happens.
