The Cowboys continue to make moves at the safety position today. After giving S Jakar Hamilton an offer to be on the practice squad, the picture continues to get clearer.
The biggest news is that the team has decided to place Matt Johnson on Injured Reserve. For the entire season.
Matt Johnson will go on injured reserve for the season. Club will keep options open to use recall IR for another player if needed.

Johnson has been out of action since the preseason opener against Miami in the Hall of Fame Game. He chased down a receiver and then left the game with what would turn out to be a stress reaction in his foot. He was never able to return to the field. Multiple injuries kept the 2012 fourth-round pick from getting on the field as a rookie, and now his career with the Cowboys is squarely in doubt.
In other safety news, a player on the bubble actually had some control over his roster position. S Danny McCray was tendered a restricted free agent offer of $1.323m earlier in the offseason. He has agreed to reduce that to around $700,000 according to DallasCowboys.com's Nick Eatman. This would allow him to remain with the team as a Special Teams ace, instead of being a roster casualty.
These moves probably leave UDFA S Jeff Heath battling with veteran Eric Frampton for the final safety position, if the team even decides to go with five safeties. Barry Church and Will Allen are the starters, with third-round rookie JJ Wilcox as the primary backup. Sterling Moore has the position flex to play both corner and safety, remaining in the mix as well.
[UPDATE] Todd Archer says that McCray's salary is even lower.
Cowboys safety news: Danny McCray takes paycut to $630k, Matt Johnson on season-ending IR with foot injury. Other moves still pending.

For what it's worth, Eric Frampton is scheduled to make $700,000 if he makes the team. I think the writing on the wall may be getting clearer that Heath will be the fifth safety.
