The Cowboys have cut B.W. Webb, a fourth round pick last year, and lose Jakar Hamilton to a four-game suspension. Which makes CBs Terrance Mitchell and Tyler Patmon as well as S Ahmad Dixon virtual roster locks for final cuts on Saturday.
The Cowboys decided to cut former 2013 fourth-round pick B.W. Webb today, as they still needed to make a roster move to account for signing Phillip Tanner, and Webb apparently fit the bill.
Webb, a small school prospect out of William & Mary, struggled to adapt to the pace of the NFL game, and did not have a strong offseason this year. Observers felt that he played tentatively and lacked the necessary aggressiveness.
In the span of a three days, the Cowboys have now cut two former fourth-round picks. Matt Johnson was cut on Tuesday, and like Webb, Johnson was also a small school prospect.
Webb is still eligible for a spot on the practice squad, so he may still end up with the Cowboys this season, but the Cowboys obviously felt better about the remaining cornerbacks on their roster.
In other news, safety Jakar Hamilton will be suspended without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The fact that Hamilton received a four-game suspension means he's already in Stage Two of the NFLs substance abuse program, and that he's already failed a drug test at least once. Another failed test could result in a one-year suspension.
Hamilton had been battling injuries in camp, and may have been on the roster bubble anyway. Like Orlando Scandrick, who's also suspended for the first four games, Hamilton won't count against the 53-man roster during his suspension. The Cowboys will have to decide whether they want Hamilton back after the suspension, either on the 53-man roster or on the practice squad, but they could also release him outright at any point.
As a resut of the suspension, Hamilton forfeits 4/17ths of his base salary and has to repay 4/17ths of his prorated signing bonus for the year. For Hamilton, that adds up to a cool $118,667, quite a price to pay for whatever he took.
The decision to cut Webb, and the pending suspension of Hamilton help explain the Cowboys' recent interest in bringing in defensive backs from the Patriots, most recently safety Jemea Thomas.
Ultimately, these roster moves are good news for rookie CBs Terrance Mitchell and Tyler Patmon as well as rookie S Ahmad Dixon, who all now look like roster locks with final cuts approaching on Saturday.
