This is a smart deal for the Cowboys as long as the money is reasonable, and given how soft the running back market has been, there is no reason to think it won’t be a bargain. McFadden has now gone from the Cowboys lead back in the 2015 season once the Joseph Randle experiment blew up, to a high-quality backup as shown by the end of last year. Alfred Morris held the spot as primary backup to Zeke, but once McFadden was healthy enough to play after his elbow injury, Morris was relegated to inactive status.

McFadden is a back who can handle all the elements that the Cowboys desire in a back, and seems to be more at home in the Cowboys offense than Morris. This begs the question if the Cowboys have plans to release Morris anytime soon and reclaim a little bit of salary cap space as having both backs seems a little redundant at this point. The Cowboys will likely grab another back in the draft (or maybe free agency), possibly one more in the mold of Lance Dunbar who just left for the Rams.
