The former Cowboys great has a new gig.
Cowboys legend Daryl “Moose” Johnston is going to give the player personnel thing a second go-around. He has joined the Dallas franchise of the upcoming XFL league as its Director of Player Personnel. Moose recently completed a stint in a similar position for the San Antonio team of the Alliance of American Football, the league that went under before their inaugural season was even complete.
Johnston’s main gig is of course as a broadcaster of NFL games with Fox, but he will now assist head coach Bob Stoops in creating a Dallas franchise for the new XFL league that will start play at the conclusion of the upcoming NFL season. The XFL is the creation of Vince McMahon and he has stated that he has enough funding to keep the league going for a few years and that it won’t suffer the same fate as the AAF. That league collapsed so abruptly, that Johnston received a surprising phone call.
Johnston said AAF co-founder Bill Polian called him while the team was practicing and told him to immediately shut down the practice, because the AAF had collapsed so suddenly that if a player got hurt on the practice field, his medical expenses wouldn’t even be covered.
“You’ve got to shut practice down,” Johnston said Polian told him. “In case anybody gets hurt, we don’t know who’s going to be responsible.”
The XFL should be more stable with McMahon’s ability to fund the league. Moose did a good job in his short stint with the San Antonio team as they ended up with a winning record.
He will now try to do it again in Dallas. The XFL will start in February of 2020 and the league has broadcast deals with ABC/ESPN and FOX.
