News: BTB: ESPN’s Todd McShay Latest Three-Round Mock Draft: Cowboys Upgrade Their Secondary

Todd McShay plays general manager for the entire league and constructs a three-round mock draft.

Todd McShay, half of ESPN’s draft duo, has released his latest mock draft. In this one, he goes three rounds deep, and instead of projecting picks he thinks each team would make, he’s acting as the general manager. That means he’s making what he thinks is the pick in the best interest of each team, not necessarily relying on rumors and insider information of who they might pick.

So let’s jump right in.

Dallas Cowboys

Round 1 (28): Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida

Round 2 (60): Adam Shaheen, TE, Ashland

Round 3 (92): Justin Evans, S, Texas A&M

Wilson has some of the best ball skills of any defensive back in this class, totaling 14 pass breakups and six interceptions. The Cowboys need more big and physical corners like Wilson (6-1½, 211) after seeing Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne depart in free agency. Dallas also lost safeties J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church, which was the impetus for the Evans pick. He can manufacture big plays (five interceptions), but Evans will need to play with better discipline in the pros. I love Shaheen's tape, and he'd be the perfect tight end to learn from veteran Jason Witten as Witten's career winds to a close. Shaheen ran a 4.79 40 at 278 pounds. That's ridiculous.

McShay starts Dallas out with a cornerback, much to the approval of our own Tom Ryle, but to the chagrin of DannyPhantom.

Four cornerbacks are taken before Wilson in the first round: Marshon Lattimore (#5), Kevin King (#11), Gareon Conley (#22), and Tre’Davious White (#27). Both King and Conley are a couple of favorites around these parts.

As for the edge rushers, four of those were taken ahead of the Cowboys: Myles Garrett (#1), Solomon Thomas (#2), Derek Barnett (#9), and Takkarist McKinley (#21). Immediately following the Cowboys pick of Wilson at #28, there is a run on edge rushers. Charles Harris (#29), T.J. Watt (#30), and Taco Charlton (#31).

So would you be okay passing on those three for Wilson?

In round two is a prospect we really haven’t talked about much, TE Adam Shaheen. But in the scouting and NFL world, he’s gaining momentum rapidly.

Shaheen could hear his name called very early in the second round – and most certainly somewhere on the second day of the draft. He has quickly gained the attention of general managers with his rare size, frame, speed and athleticism (he's known as "Baby Gronk" in the scouting community), and he's made miraculous gains in a relatively small period of time.

NFL.com says this about the D-II prospect:

BOTTOM LINE

Big, fast and athletic, Shaheen will immediately interest teams who are looking for size and traits. He's a poorer blocker than what might be expected for a player with his frame, but he's also a much more dangerous pass catching target. The jump in competition will be substantial and teams will expect him to become a more consistent blocker, but he's a pass catching tight end in a Y-tight end's body. Shaheen has starting potential with an ability to impact a passing game early in his career.
