Four Internal Free Agents The Dallas Cowboys Should Re-Sign

The Cowboys will be looking at free agency soon, they should start by looking at their own.

Over the past few seasons, we have learned a few things about how the Dallas Cowboys front office works in the offseason. Stephen Jones and Will McClay have shown that they will spend wisely on players they believe helps them going forward. This team uses free agency as more of a guide to fill holes to set themselves up for the ultimate prize, which in their minds is the NFL draft.

This is quite the young team outside of Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Doug Free and L.P. Ladouceur. The Cowboys’ brass knows that the NFL is a young man’s league and they really don’t like to throw money at aging players. We also know that the Cowboys really prefer their own homegrown free agents versus guys that are outside the walls of The Star in Frisco.

This team has 18 free agents set to hit the market this offseason and there are some pretty big names on that list too. Guys like Brandon Carr, Barry Church, Morris Claiborne, Ronald Leary, and Terrance Williams all have starting roles on this team. Other guys like Brice Butler have made an impact on the team that will also result in an open spot if they're gone.

Over the past few offseasons, we've noticed a path and that's what leads to the thought process of this column. The Dallas Cowboys are most assuredly going to decide which guys they want to keep first before they look outside for help. Here are the names of guys that the Cowboys should consider bringing back for 2017.

CB Brandon Carr, 30

DT Terrell McClain, 28

LG Ronald Leary, 27

SS Barry Church, 28

Keep Leary. Anyone playing defense can find the door.

They should target McClain and Church as well as possibly Carr. The former two are starters or backups able to start without much fall off. Carr should be considered because we need some stability at CB likely losing Claiborne. He'll need to sign a reasonable contract though. Church as well. I like McClain and he should get a good contract.

I've changed my mind on Leary. I've always liked the player and wanted to keep him but thinking it was too expensive to do so. Now, I think they should pay him as a LG starter and move Collins to RT to compete with Free and Green. Unlike others I'd still see what Free could bring to the table but I won't be surprised to see them part ways with him.

Collins does not have the feet to play RT on this level and will probably remain at G regardless.

That's what I've thought but I've seen some film on him and he has a decent kick out. Maybe he can be developed. IDK. What they can't do is waste him. Either play him or trade him. He's too good to ride the pine.

CB Brandon Carr, 30 - maybe
DT Terrell McClain, 28 - absolutely
LG Ronald Leary, 27 - would but he'll be too expensive
SS Barry Church, 28 - and I'm out. Bad article.

Resign Leary and Williams. Maybe Mo on the cheap and as a rotational player. No Mo...Maybe Carr...but again on the cheap. I have nothing against Church either...solid player.

I'm not opposed to resigning Williams. I thought he'd develop into a better ball catcher but he's still decent and manages to get open. He comes up big at times. He's a tweener IMO. Not quite top of the line but a pretty good ball player.

Only as a backup and on the very cheap. Never aa a starter. Simply not reliable.

I like the player but he does not stay on the field. Maybe that'll change but I'd let him test the market and bring him in on a friendly contract if no one is buying. He can play just not consistently enough to be top notch and there's the viability issue. He could be a CB 3-5 on my team ON a friendly contract.

Yep. Good solid #2 that has made some big catches for the club. Takes a lot of heat...but is a decent and competent #2 reciever.

Agreed. Decent talent. Too fragile to be counted on as a starter. Players don't get stronger physically as they age.

Even at his $8 million a year salary? I considered him too until I saw that.
Well he's a free agent so that means his next salary is negotiated.
But yes, if it's 8 million or above then I'm sure we pass.

It is his kick out that he struggles with the most on the edge but you are correct, use him at G or get something for the player.

He struggles with his limited kickslide range and is better suited inside at G.
