Coach Garrett updated the press on all things Cowboys.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett spoke to the media before the team began their first practice back home at The Star in Frisco. It’s been a long time since we’ve been back here.

Here is a recap of Jason Garrett’s answers (all answers are paraphrased and not actual quotes).

Injury updates

Jason Garrett mentioned that both DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyrone Crawford will work in individual drills on Tuesday. He also said the team is anticipating Sean Lee doing something today.

Amari Cooper is not anticipated to practice on Tuesday

Coach said the standard things of Cooper not practicing today but is working in rehab and improving.

More injury updates

Tyron Smith not expected to practice. Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz will not practice, no practice for Zack Martin, Jeff Heath will be limited today. Connor McGovern is still limited in what he can do.

Byron Jones and Noah Brown will remain on PUP

The Cowboys are going to continue to give these two time, but Garrett did say that Byron is right on schedule. Brown is behind some and likely won’t practice this week.

Garrett has stayed in touch with Ezekiel Elliott

Jason Garrett noted that they have all been great conversations with Zeke and that all of this has been part of the business of football. Of course he said that ideally Zeke would be at practice with his team, but they trust that he’ll be in football shape when necessary.

How long does Zeke need to be there before a game?

Asked how long the Cowboys would need Ezekiel Elliott present before a game, Jason Garrett did his best to dance around the subject. He noted that you manage things the way they come and that’s where they are in this process.

Trysten Hill has done “a lot of good things”

Jason Garrett spoke highly of the team’s second-round pick Trysten Hill. He mentioned that at times young players can revert to techniques they’ve used previously but that Trysten is developing each and every day. He likes Hill’s get off from the line and ability to disrupt and penetrate.

Taco Charlton is doing a good job

Jason Garrett didn’t want to compare anything to last year, but he mentioned that Taco Charlton has done a good job through this preseason. He noted that Taco has been showing up in practice and games, and has been around the quarterback affecting plays. He has been playing physically tougher and that he has embraced the opportunity of defensive ends ahead of him on the depth chart not being there. He also said that left defensive end is probably his best spot given his experience at the University of Michigan.

Kerry Hyder is impressive

Garrett also threw some praise Kerry Hyder’s way and highlighted his effort above all things. He noted they liked him coming out of school and that he is just a pro, great approach to the game.

Michael Gallup has consistent production

Asked where Gallup has developed specifically, Jason Garrett noted that the receiver has simply continued to get very consistent. He noted that Gallup got better as last season went on and that he truly does get better every day.
