Every team drafts for need to some degree. But it is unfair to say the Cowboys are guilty of this as an exclusive strategy. But this year they probably drifted into the need category more than other seasons simply because they failed to address their main need in free agency. The Cowboys cornered themselves and had to find a LG in this draft. The prospect of going into the season having to start Connor McGovern at LG was frightening. In the long run they may have been better off drafting Linderbaum at 24 but that may have forced them to take a OG in the 2nd round. Not necessarily a bad choice but it would have been risky because they needed to get a starting capable player.

Point is....needs change, and quickly. Taking the better players is a more sound long term approach.

HAD to have a CB2 at 44 last year, then they won 12 games without him because Brown and Lewis stepped up.

There were better players on the board then as well.

As far as BPA meeting need in round one, if it doesn't, a trade up or down is favorable over fudging a list in some lame attempt to prove to the world you've got this.

Lol what list was fudged, you making stuff up now, bottoming, they are one of the better drafting teams, that says they do it right more often than not.

Not only do I think they are guilty of it, but I also think they zero in on certain players they know will be there at each selection. Early anyway.

This past one sure felt that way. May want to look at T Hill as well on that. They knew they were taking him.

Again with the bottom lines.....no sound strategy should include leaving higher ranked players on the board, and they often do.

And again on this, needs change quickly.

At LG 13 months ago, it looked like we had one more good player there than starting spots. Same thing may happen a safety this year. Never know.

Either they thought their 1st round pick played at Utah, or whoever changed Lloyd's name to Smith forgot to change that part.

Think Jerry didn't know that list would be figured out by the world? It was, and they aren't even good at their planned lies.

McClay's draft board is based on talent and readiness.
    - He does not include position value, need, character, medical, etc. in the board.
    - They evaluate those issues on draft day.
    - His observation prior to getting the top talent evaluation job was that those issues we're double emphasized if they were included in the board rankings and then again evaluated on draft day.

They see Tyler Smith as a future LT which has much higher position value than Safety.

In 2017 the only player remain on their board with 1st round grade was RB Dalvin Cook.
    - They didn't draft him.

    And then there this.....

How different is the 2017 season if Cook is there and Elliott accepts his suspension? Maybe our opponents actually DID commit one single holding penalty in two months?

Does Zeke hold out? Does Jerry cave? I guarantee if nothing else, Elliott doesn't get the contract he did which is still killing us.

In retrospect, I still say go BPA, but you make some good points per usual.

When is the last time they drafted a FS in the first round. I think it was Roy Williams in 2002.. but really was more like a in the box safety. I knew they were not going with Cine.. probably would have taken Devin Lloyd at LB if Smith would not have been there. But of course, Smith was gonna be there. LOL.....

You can do that when there is no accountability....you don't fire yourself. Hey, there's always next year.

Yes, there was a bigger need at OL then it was at safety. They didn't cover themselves to so called take the best player available. If they weren't going to take Cine over Smith, why window dress your board like Broaddus always says. They reached to fill a need, like so many teams also do. Without the use of fa nor the trade market, almost have no choice but to have a needs based draft.

Not sure why we are complaining about the Cowboys drafting. Since 2010 every Cowboys 1st round pic who has played in the NFL except Taco and Morris Claiborne has made the pro-bowl. That is 7 out of 9. $ of 11 2nd round picks also made a pro-bowl. I think that is a pretty good record. Whatever their strategy they are getting good players in the draft.

I agree entirely, and they may very well get away with it this time, and I'm certainly rooting for that to be the case....but it's just not a sound philosophy over a long period of time.

I get WHY, and I like Smith, but it just goes against what is considered sound draft strategy.

Why else try to cover your move? Why do they have a half a project OL ranked ahead of Lloyd, Linderbaum, both Johnsons and Green? They didn't. Maybe Linderbaum.

I don't at ALL buy that they had Smith ranked ahead of Johnson and Green. He was just the last one left that could possibly start at LG this year, and they had to have that. They put themselves in that spot and it'll bite them eventually if they continue to pull that.

take a safety in the 1st rd is dumb any way with salary and scale and positon value and all that even late 1st it is so more smart to take a premium positon who maybe lower on ur draftboard

that is why people saying hamilton top 3 or top 5 pick was silly

I'm not really arguing against that.

I just think leaving yourself in a spot where you MUST come out of a draft with a starting player at a certain position isn't good business, even if you get away with it sometimes.

I agree with that, for sure. Every need should be filled before the draft so BPA is a possible strategy. This year they failed miserably. But this is a product of their free agency strategy.

I'm ok passing on Cine, our safety position is the best it has been in a decade.
