News: BTB: Jerry Jones announced that his wife, Gene Jones, will be his presenter for the Pro

151 days after it was announced that the Cowboys owner is a Hall of Famer, Jerry Jones announced that his wife Gene will present him.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony is one of the best parts of the football calendar. It allows us to honor the game’s legends and serves as the first real, tangible indicator that football is returning to our lives.

2017’s induction ceremony will be extremely special for Dallas Cowboys fans as the team will be playing in the annual Hall of Fame Game, and that’s because team owner Jerry Jones is part of the 2017 Class.

Part of the induction process is a speech that each enshrinee gives, but prior to that they are presented into the Hall of Fame by someone. Typically this is a former teammate, former coach, a son, a daughter, you get the picture. While the 2017 Class has been announcing who would present them, Jerry had been waiting and now we have our answer. Per the mothership, Jerry Jones’ wife Gene will present him for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame:

“Any recognition that I may have received throughout our years in the NFL has been the result of a group effort involving all of my family,” said Jerry Jones. “Gene is the backbone of our family, and her influence guides and inspires all of us. She is my closest advisor, my best friend, and it is only fitting that she present me, and represent our entire family, at this very special time.”

Many had long thought that Jerry’s son, and heir to the throne, Stephen Jones would do the presenting. Lots of fans hoped that we’d see a reunion of sorts and that Jimmy Johnson would present him (coincidentally Johnson is presenting fellow 2017 inductee Jason Taylor). For what it’s worth, I thought it would be Charlotte Jones Anderson, Jerry’s daughter and the more public of his three children.

Up until last year it was relatively rare for an inductee’s wife to present him, as Mike Singletary’s wife Kim was the only one to ever do it in 1998. Brett Favre joined that club in 2016 when his wife Deanna presented him, and last week fellow 2017 inductee Kurt Warner announced that his wife Brenda will present him. Gene is, appropriately for the current Cowboys, #4.

This news comes on a Wednesday post July 4th that is already a bit contentious for the Cowboys as linebacker Damien Wilson was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Not to mention quarterback Dak Prescott is in the media for allegedly using a machine to sign autographs. If the Cowboys were saving the Gene news for a rainy day, well I’d say it’s pouring.

Jerry Jones will be formally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 5th after not only Gene’s presentation but the Cowboys and their first preseason game two days before. Hurry up, football. We miss you.
