The Cowboys brought in their second Patriots defensive back of the preseason in Jemea Thomas and released wide receiver Tim Benford to make room on the roster.
Despite hosting their kickoff luncheon at AT&T Stadium today, the Cowboys kept busy with a number of roster moves.
Earlier in the day the Cowboys brought back former Cowboys running back Phllip Tanner, who is expected to take a lot of snaps against the Broncos, as both Joseph Randle (ablique) and Ryan Williams (groin) will likely sit out due to their injuries.
Later in the day, the Cowboys were awarded cornerback Jemea Thomas on waivers. Thomas had been released by the Patriots yesterday as they got down to the league mandated 75-man roster size. Thomas, a sixth-round draft pick for the Patriots this year, will be available for the game against the Broncos on Thursday.
In a parallel move, the Cowboys cut wide receiver Tim Benford to make room on the roster for Thomas. No announcement has been made yet about who will be cut to make room for Tanner.
The Cowboys would have entered Thursday's game short at both running back and corner, as Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne (shoulder), Sterling Moore and B.W. Webb (hip) are not expected to play.
Coming out of Georgia Tech, the 5’9" Thomas was a a bit of an under-the-radar guy. He’s good in coverage, has decent ball skills, and hits hard for his size but is not particularly fast (4.55 40-time at the Combine). He can play both corner and safety, which gives him some flexibility and gives the Cowboys some depth across positions. Thomas missed too much time during Patriots training camp due to injury and was never able to catch up. Time will tell whether he's more than just a warm body brought in for the last preseason game.
We don't have much on Thomas right now, but we do have one gif of the 5’9" and 192-lb Thomas showing off his 37-inch vertical by beating 6’5" 240lb first-round draft pick Kelvin Benjamin for a jump ball and then snagging the one-handed interception.
