The first day of on-field workouts at the 2017 Combine feature running backs and offensive linemen.

The on-field workouts at the 2017 NFL Combine finally get underway today. The players are a mixture of running backs, offensive linemen and special teams players.

The Cowboys may have interest in running backs and linemen, but it’s unlikely that they will be drafting either of those spots on the first day, or maybe even the second.

At running back the Cowboys are set at starter with Ezekiel Elliott. The backup at the moment is Alfred Morris but he fell out of favor late in the season and is a definite candidate for release. Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar are both free agents, and the Cowboys might like to replace Morris with McFadden, but they would still need a third guy. Dunbar is a possibility, but it should surprise no one if the Cowboys draft a running back to fill the third slot. That guy might just be a third-down, change-of-pace guy, so keep an eye on the smaller, quicker backs who can catch the ball during the workouts.

On the offensive line, although there are rumblings that Doug Free might be considering retirement, there are no definitive signs that is happening. If he stays, the Cowboys still might want to look for a future right tackle since Chaz Green just can’t seem to stay healthy. They also have Ron Leary as a free agent, and La’el Collins waiting to replace him. The Cowboys are likely shopping for depth, and the future, if they look to grab an offensive lineman. They have spare parts in reserve, but you never know when value is going to present itself in the draft.

This is an open thread to discuss the combine.
