A quick review of the latest power rankings, and where they rank the Cowboys and Eagles ahead of Sunday's game.
It's Eagles week in Cowboys Nation, and as a special feature for the upcoming game, our power rankings today feature the comments for both the Cowboys and the Eagles from this week's roundup of the latest power rankings.
Of the ten power rankings we survey below, eight have the Cowboys ranked as a top three team. All 10 have the Cowboys ranked ahead of the Eagles. Does that mean the Cowboys will beat the Eagles on Sunday night?
You be the judge of that. For now, here's a summary of where the Cowboys and Eagles are ranked heading into Week 8 (with the Week 7 rankings in parenthesis), and a little further down you can see how that compares to the rest of the NFC East.
Eagles: No. 12 (15)
The Cowboys got a much-needed week off, allowing Orlando Scandrick and Dez Bryant to heal up ahead of their prime-time matchup with the Eagles. The Cowboys will be at full strength for that one, and they’ll need it. The Eagles came away with their second seriously impressive win of the year, topping the Vikings at home by forcing Minnesota into a handful of uncharacteristic turnovers. Carson Wentz still hasn’t been as sharp as he was in the first few games, but there’s little reason to be concerned with the rookie so long as he improves his footwork a bit.Eagles: No. 10 (12)
They come off their bye with a big division game against the Eagles. It gives Dak Prescott another proving game with Tony Romo still out. The defense bounced back from two poor games to play really well against the Vikings. Now here come the Cowboys.Eagles: No. 7 (13)
It was an off week for Dallas, a time when Dak Prescott decided to go home and fish rather than get into what a suddenly famous Cowboys quarterback could get into. One not-so-well-known factoid to come out of the bye week: Dallas entered Week 7 leading the NFL with 17 drives of 10 plays or more while only allowing nine, a figure that is in the bottom half of the league. That speaks to a rested, effective defense, don't you think? When you win, you can pull off a blazer like this with a Hanes three-for-five-bucks V-neck T-shirt. While Carson Wentz will continue to have praise heaped on him in scoops, it was the Eagles' defense that reasserted its will on Sunday. After a subpar outing in Washington, Philly's defense forced four turnovers while holding the Vikings to 282 yards. Through six games, Jim Schwartz's defense has allowed 81 offensive points. That's 13.5 per game, folks.Eagles: No. 7 (12)
This week’s upcoming Cowboys-Eagles clash is a football nerd’s dream. It’s a week away, and I’m already looking forward to it.One key question: Can Dez Bryant return at full strength? He has some catching up to do when it comes to his on-field relationship with Dak Prescott. There are plays to be had in the passing game this weekend. Props to coach Doug Pederson for figuring out the best way to beat the Vikings is to be the Vikings. It wasn’t pretty, but not much with a rookie quarterback is.
Especially when that rookie quarterback throws two gimme interceptions deep in Vikings territory. But hats off to Carson Wentz; he blocked out those mistakes.
Brandon Graham and Co. made Sam Bradford’s homecoming just as uncomfortable.
Eagles: No. 12 (14)
I’m guessing the Cowboys will probably show up as No. 2 on most other power rankings considering they didn’t lose or tie last week (Dallas had a bye). I can see the argument. I also wonder if the defense is good enough, especially if Dak Prescott ever slumps. But who knows, maybe Prescott never slumps and has the greatest rookie season ever. Lost in the excitement of a big win against Minnesota was that Carson Wentz had his worst game as a pro. He had just 138 yards, a short touchdown pass and two interceptions for a 52.4 rating.Eagles: No. 7 (14)
Dak Prescott inches closer to the top spot during their bye week. It looks like Dez Bryant will make his return for a primetime showdown against the Eagles. A matchup between two terrific rookie quarterbacks awaits. Philly snapped a two-game post-bye skid by toppling the only undefeated team in the league and making the biggest jump of the week from No. 14. Jim Schwartz's defense is the real deal. Can Carson Wentz out-duel fellow rookie Dak Prescott in Big D this week?Eagles: No. 9 (15)
The bye week is over and Dak Prescott remains the Cowboys’ QB. Going back to Tony Romo is not an option yet. And, really, it shouldn’t be a realistic option as long as Prescott keeps playing like this. The Prescott-led offense could have WR Dez Bryant back Sunday night against the Eagles.The Eagles are establishing themselves as a dominant team at home. They’re 3-0 this season at Lincoln Financial Field and have outscored the Steelers and Vikings, 55-13, in their last two games there. But now they must take that level of play on the road, with their next two games at Dallas and at the Meadowlands against the Giants.
Eagles: No. 12 (18)
Their bye came at right time given rest of league's hot teams lost in Week 7. Eagles D will be Dak Prescott's toughest test yet. Defense is up to 12 takeaways, and special teams has produced TDs last two weeks -- good timing as Carson Wentz reminds us he's a rookie.Eagles: No. 12 (15)
We'll find out soon if the Cowboys stick with Dak Prescott or go back to Tony Romo as the team's starting QB. The decision comes at a critical time for the Cowboys, as they could take a big lead in the NFC East with a win against the Eagles in Week 8. If Romo starts, keep in mind he has won five of his past six games against Philadelphia. The Eagles have one offensive touchdown in their past two games. Their defense has one touchdown in that span, and their special teams unit has two. It's never a bad thing to get points from defense and special teams, but QB Carson Wentz needs to start moving the ball again, especially at Dallas in Week 8.
