August 13, 2016 was no longer just an ordinary day at the Coliseum.

The Dallas Cowboys headed to California last August to play in their preseason opener against the newly-minted Los Angeles Rams. The hype was plenty as the National Football League found itself back in L.A., but there was concern around the Cowboys organization to find a suitable backup quarterback for their oft-injured starting quarterback, Tony Romo. Kellen Moore had broken his leg prior to the game and it was now Dak Prescott who would get most of the preseason playing time, and likely become the backup quarterback for the 2016 season.

That photo you scrolled past was of Dak Prescott warming up before the preseason opener last season. It was the first game of his professional career and no one in the front office knew what to expect. Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson recently said that he “wasn’t sure how Dak would respond in his first game, playing in the Coliseum and all that stuff.” Well, heck, none of his did.

All Dak Prescott did was impress. He ended the game by completing 10 of 12 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, his poise, accuracy and finesse for the offense was recognized by Jerry Jones, Jason Garrett and his newfound pass-catcher Dez Bryant. After the game, when asked about Dak Prescott, Dez gushed and clearly knew something that none of us did.

"I think the best thing about Dak is that he is extremely calm," Bryant said of Prescott. "It's like he's been here before. He's not playing like a rookie. He is going to be very good; he's special."

Little did Dez know at the time that Tony Romo would get injured just two weeks later which would thrust Mr Prescott into the starting role. In Seattle, after Romo’s injury, and during subsequent preseason games and practices, Prescott continued to exceed expectations as he won over his teammates and ran the offense like a veteran. As they say, the rest is history, as Dak went on to have the best rookie season of any quarterback in NFL history.

This Saturday, August 12th, 2017, Dak Prescott will return to the Coliseum a new man. He is the starting quarterback and the face of the Dallas Cowboys. The only question moving forward is which breakout rookie will have a similar impact this season?
