The Cowboys secondary is an injury magnet this season.
When the Dallas Cowboys played the Minnesota Vikings last week, there was a brief mini-controversy when rookie cornerback Anthony Brown started over Orlando Scandrick. As our own VAfan noted in his weekly Snap Counts article, Brown got 74 snaps during the game (the same as Brandon Carr), and Scandrick notched 54. That made it plain that Scandrick had been relegated to third-corner status, something he was not pleased about.
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick didn’t start Thursday against Minnesota, and he wasn’t happy about it.
"Those are questions you have to ask Jason Garrett," Scandrick said. "I just work here. I don’t determine how much I play."
When asked about it, Jason Garrett noted that they felt Scandrick was banged-up and that they needed him in the slot. It turns out that Scandrick is banged-up, and it is an injury that is not going away anytime soon. He has plantar fasciitis in his left foot, and the only way to heal it totally is rest.
“It’s very frustrating,” Scandrick said. “But there is nothing I can do. I doubt it gets better until the off-season. The only treatment is rest. And I can’t get that at this time. It’s not a long-term health issue. But it’s unfortunate. I knew the first year back would be difficult and things like this would pop up. I’ve just got to get through this season.”
The sooner the Cowboys can lock up playoff possibilities, the sooner they can start resting players, starting with Scandrick. The Cowboys secondary has been hard hit by injury this season, getting them all healthy before the playoffs start would be a huge bonus. It doesn’t sound like Scandrick will be 100%, but a few weeks of rest could certainly help.
Dallas is still hoping that Morris Claiborne will return for the playoffs healthy from his groin injury. Barry Church is back and J.J. Wilcox is supposed to start practicing again this week.
And finally, lets hear it for the job sixth-round pick Anthony Brown is doing. He has slid seamlessly into the Cowboys secondary rotation, even being elevated to starting level on occasion - and he has responded. This draft by the Cowboys has been a gold mine. Everyone knows about Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, but Anthony Brown and third-round selection Maliek Collins are important pieces, too. Now if we can just get Jaylon Smith going...
