Can any coach outsmart Jason Garrett?
We wrap up our ranking of the NFC East teams heading into 2017 by taking a look at the head coaches of each team.
Dallas Cowboys: Jason Garrett
Garrett is coming off of the best coaching year of his career. He led a rookie quarterback and running back to great heights as his team won 13 games on its way to securing the top seed in the NFC. Garrett was recognized as the Coach of the Year for his 2016 performance, and while there is plenty of fanfare surrounding Jason Garrett, let’s keep the pressure on: he has still never coached past the divisional round. He is the top coach in the division but he still pales in comparison to many coaches around the league.
New York Giants: Ben McAdoo
McAdoo stepped into the head coaching position in 2016 and led the Giants to an 11-5 record before losing to Green Bay in the wild-card round. His team beat the Cowboys two times last season and his players seem to enjoy playing for him. He was considered the offensive guru during the Tom Coughlin days, and as a result he continues to be the team’s play-caller. Look for him to continue to improve and put his team in the best position to succeed.
Washington Commanders: Jay Gruden
Gruden on his own is a respectable coach who seems to have a strong demeanor in the locker room. Unfortunately, there has been considerable chaos in the Commanders front office, and while that may be the usual state of affairs in Washington, it doesn't make Griuden's life any easier. He has an overall .448 winning percentage in Washington but did turn around the team after initially going 4-12 in his first season. He enters this season as the third-best coach in the division.
Philadelphia Eagles: Doug Pederson
Doug Pederson enters his sophomore campaign for Philadelphia with his sophomore quarterback, Carson Wentz. He coached relatively well last season but it is difficult to judge a new coach with a new quarterback after just one season. Let’s see how he does this season. He enters this season as the fourth-ranked coach in the division.
Summary
Dallas Cowboys, 4 points
New York Giants, 3 points
Washington Commanders, 2 points
Philadelphia Eagles, 1 point
