Just what the Cowboys didn’t need, a possible issue with their defensive line.
It seems like every year the Cowboys head into the season with a key defensive end missing time due to a suspension. In 2014, it was Greg Hardy who missed the first four games of the season. Last year, DeMarcus Lawrence had to sit out the first four games. And of course, there is the enigma of Randy Gregory who has missed significant time due to multiple failed drug tests.
And this year, the Cowboys might have another edge rusher to add to the list. Early reports indicate that third-year player David Irving could be facing a suspension after failing a drug test for using supplements.
Irving has turned heads in limited action in Dallas. He broke on the scene in 2015 when the Cowboys signed him from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. He caught people’s attention with a blocked field goal against the Seattle Seahawks. Last season his role was expanded and he flashed more potential, having huge fourth quarter performances against Green Bay and Tampa Bay. Recently, Lance Zierlien did a re-draft of the 2015 NFL Draft and he had the Cleveland Browns selecting Irving with the 12th overall pick.
Entering the 2017 season, expectations are high for the Cowboys young pass rusher. But this recent news of a failed drug test is disappointing and could impact his chances of having a breakout season. Of course, it’s early and we really don’t have all the information yet.
Bleacher Report indicated that Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan was the first to report the news.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Irving is facing a four-game suspension stemming from the use of a product he had a marketing deal with.
That sounds odd. Players wouldn’t knowingly be promoting some product that was deemed illegal.
Fisher would go on to say:
I’m told there is an “accidental’’ nature to Irving’s use here, and it is hoped – by both the Irving camp and by the Cowboys – that could help in the appeal process.
It definitely sounds fishy. Irving is expected to appeal. Stay tuned as we will report more information on this issue as it develops.
