An update of sorts on David Irving.
The Cowboys have had one of the NFL’s more formidable front sevens over the course of this season and have done so with a defensive line that’s been one of the league’s best.
Surprisingly, that line group hasn’t included David Irving. The Cowboys poached him from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad back in 2015, and ever since then it’s been an up and down road with him regarding off-the-field incidents.
A report from Mike Fisher on Friday gave insight into the latest details on David Irving as far as the Dallas Cowboys are concerned. According to the report, Irving has missed multiple drug tests over the last two months (misses count as failures) as well as all sorts of team-related activities and functions.
Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving has missed “multiple’’ mandatory drug tests in the last two months, sources tell me, putting in jeopardy not only any chance he has of participating with this team during the NFL Playoffs but also his chance of playing in the league anytime soon.
Irving’s off-field life continues to be plagued by legal turmoil largely related to conflict with his ex-girlfriend, with whom he shares a young daughter. And his on-field efforts have been marred in part by a high ankle sprain he sustained in practice on Nov. 2. But since incurring that injury, Irving has rarely shown up for work here inside The Star -- not only missing participation in practices, but also declining to attend practice as an observer, declining to attend meetings or watch film, and declining to accept rehab help with the ankle and encouragement to stay active in the weight room.
This latest update echoes the one that we got in late November and it truly does seem like Irving has played his last snaps with the Cowboys, perhaps in the NFL as a whole. Irving has remained on the Cowboys 53-man roster since returning from suspension and Fisher notes that while this has been done partly because the Cowboys hoped he could contribute to their season it’s also been done partly for his benefit.
But most of all there is this: If the Cowboys attempt to activate him, that might activate the NFL into taking action against him. Presently, it’s seems like a “see-no-evil’’ situation; the league may not wish to call attention to this unfortunate story ... but Irving trying to play may force their hand in a negative way.
As the Cowboys are in the playoffs, their season lives on a week-to-week basis. At most, there are two games remaining after Saturday’s contest in Los Angeles, Irving playing in them if they were to happen seems like a very small likelihood.
All we can do now is hope for the best for David Irving as he works on his own life.
