Cowboys make another addition to the coaching staff.

Mike McCarthy has been a busy man since becoming the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. A year away from the game not only gave him time to reflect, it gave him time to outline exactly how a new staff could ultimately come together for him. We’ve seen him bring in big names (John Fassel at special teams coordinator), former friends (Mike Nolan at defensive coordinator), and people that he knew during his time with the Green Bay Packers (new offensive line coach Joe Philbin as just one example).

According to a report from ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, a new and perhaps more interesting name has joined McCarthy’s staff - Rob Davis.

Rob Davis has not only joined Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff in Dallas but his title is assistant head coach, sources said. A surprise considering he’s never actually been on a coaching staff. He was director of player development with the Packers, which was under the football operations department.

Davis played for the Packers during the late 90s into the early 2000s (he played alongside Brett Favre and Eagles head coach Doug Pederson) as the team’s long-snapper, but he also served as the organization’s Director of Player Personnel for nine years before stepping away from football altogether in 2017.

What is interesting about this is part of what Demovsky notes, that Davis was never a “coach” on McCarthy’s staff. He is seemingly being brought in specifically as an assistant head coach per the report which means that McCarthy wants him around on a level that holds importance. McCarthy clearly trusts and respects what Davis has to offer.

For so long the Packers were regarded as one of the NFL’s better-drafting teams thanks to the group that they had in their front office. Rob Davis was part of that so McCarthy might think that he can be of help when it comes to drafting players for the Dallas Cowboys.
