There’s a new quarterbacks coach in town.

Last season the Dallas Cowboys hired one of their former quarterbacks to coach up the position group in Kellen Moore. Next season they’ll have a former signal-caller that wore the star doing the same, but it won’t be Moore. Jon Kitna is reportedly the team’s new quarterbacks coach.

Former NFL QB Jon Kitna, now offensive coordinator for the San Diego Fleet in the Alliance of American Football, is expected to become the Cowboys’ QB coach, per a league source. Dallas’ current QB coach, Kellen Moore, is a leading candidate to become Cowboys’ OC, per sources.

Kitna has spent some time coaching in high school and most recently spent time with the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football. He’s got some experience in the type of offense that Jason Garrett likes to run so it certainly makes sense to get him on the staff if Garrett’s vision is taking over.

The thing about Kitna taking over at quarterbacks coach is... that position already had somebody filling it. Just the other day it was reported that Kellen would maintain that role in 2019, but that was before Dallas “mutually parted ways” with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. It’s been reported that there is a serious possibility of Kellen himself ascending to the throne that Scott once occupied, if Jon Kitna is taking Kellen’s old job then that all kind of makes sense.

Perhaps the Cowboys are putting together a brain trust to oversee the offense that includes help from everyone, including Jason Garrett. It’s also been reported that Red Ball himself will call the plays for the Cowboys in 2019.

There are a lot of changes happening in Dallas. Jon Kitna joining the staff means that we will now have three former Cowboys quarterbacks shaping the offense. Will the triumvirate of Jason Garrett, Kellen Moore, and Jon Kitna be enough? It’s going to be interesting to find out.
