The Cowboys will make a roster move heading into the playoffs.
Yesterday we noted that the Dallas Cowboys had worked out offensive guard and former first-round pick Jonathan Cooper. Today, Todd Archer has sources confirming that the Cowboys have reached a deal with Cooper than lasts as long as Dallas is in the playoffs.
There are a few different elements to consider with this deal. First, it’s only for the playoffs. So they are not signing him for next year when they have to make a decision about trying to re-sign guard Ron Leary or let him go in free agency. But they may be getting an extended look at Cooper in practices to see if a longer deal over the offseason is worth pursuing.
Second, why sign him now when they supposedly have La’el Collins coming back from IR? Maybe they are still a little worried about the status of Collins, and possible rustiness from such an extended layoff, especially since they already have Joe Looney on the roster. That’s a lot of backup guards. Of course, Collins does have position flex from his days of playing tackle in college. They also have the issue of Leary’s back injury to worry about.
This move would count against the four moves Dallas is allowed to make in the post-season (excluding call-ups from the practice squad). They will have to drop a player from the 53-man roster. But there is also an added benefit. According to Archer, the Cowboys would be entitled to a possible compensatory pick if the someone else signs Cooper as a free agent in the offseason. Not bad.
