People cite toe taps and body catches, but what Terrance Williams really deserves is a big round of applause.
There are a lot of superstars that are a part of the Dallas Cowboys roster.
You’ve got Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, Sean Lee, Cole Beasley, Byron Jones, Jaylon Smith, Jeff Heath (you know I had to), and so many others. How far into this list would you get before you named Terrance Williams?
Mention that name within the confines of Cowboys Nation and you’ll get one of two responses:
- “His toe tap catches are incredible! Remember 3rd and 20 in Seattle in 2014? Or the game-winning TD against Detroit that year? Or Thanksgiving last year?!”
- “Body catcher.”
People sure do love to give Terrance Williams a hard time, and it’s hard to understand why. The most common answer is typically that he didn’t totally step up to the plate when Dez Bryant missed serious time in 2015, but if you had the carousel of quarterbacks throwing to you that he did that season... you’d have a rough go as well.
All Terrance Williams has ever done is make plays and occasionally catch a pass (or a lot) with his body. Oh he’s also been the consummate professional, teammate, and ambassador for the Dallas Cowboys.
T-Will was born in Highland Hills, Dallas and went to high school at W.T. White in Dallas. He went to Baylor, located in nearby Waco, before being drafted by the Cowboys in the 3rd Round of the 2013 NFL Draft. This dude is Dallas upwards, downwards, sideways, and diagonally.
Terrance Williams is so DFW’d out that he turned down money from elsewhere in order to keep playing for America’s Team. He spoke about it recently and expanded on his decision:
“It just wasn’t about money to me,” Williams said of his free agency. “There was a lot of money I could have taken, but it’s just the people. The guys I hang around with in my locker room and then the coaches that I have. That’s a bigger price tag on it for me than money.”
Isn’t this exactly what we want from our professional athletes? For it to be about the friendships, the game, the love over the money? Terrance Williams is literally the real-life incarnated version of the bro-ness Vinny, E, Drama, and Turtle shared for one another in Entourage.
So much of the success that Dallas had in 2016 was very obviously a result of the relationships that existed in the locker room. The aforementioned stars all had a chemistry that appeared unbreakable and unique, and Terrance’s presence in Dallas seems to be another result of its long-stretching reach.
What’s particularly exciting about the 2017 Dallas Cowboys is that most of the original cast members to this Broadway show are returning. It’s going to be interesting to see how they work together in another season, to which Terrance alluded he might be a bigger part of:
“The conversations we had is they’re going to use me a lot more than they have in the past,” Williams said. “So it’s my job to be ready and my job to keep us going whenever stuff slows down a little bit. I’ve got to be the spark maker. I’ve got to keep it up. That’s my goal.
“Whenever it gets dull or we do go through a little dry spell, it’s my job to spark us back up and get us back going.”
Terrance posted career highs in receptions (52) and yards (840) in 2015 during Dez Bryant’s absence. It’s hard to imagine what a larger role for him would include, but if you read our post here at BTB about the Cowboys experimenting with Chaz Green at Left Guard... you saw Terrance Williams is lined up behind the offensive line during a run play. Scott Linehan might be cooking up something new.
Dallas is in an enviable position in that they have what feels like too many mouths to feed. However they decide to use Terrance Williams in 2017 and beyond, Cowboys Nation should celebrate how much he loves the city, community, and brotherhood that is the Dallas Cowboys.
