We know about Sean Lee, but what other Cowboys that were drafted in the second round went on to good careers?
Part two of our four-part series examines the best players the Dallas Cowboys have drafted in the second round of the NFL draft since 1995. See part one on first-rounders here.
Randall Godfrey, 1996
You may not remember that Randall Godfrey had a long and productive career as a linebacker in the NFL. He only played four years in Dallas because they chose not to match a lucrative free agent contract he got from the Titans. He played for 12 seasons with five different teams and started 149 games over that time. That’s healthy production from a second-round pick.
Flozell Adams, 1998
Flozell Adams was coached under Nick Saban at Michigan State and performed relatively well for the Cowboys, then elevated his game when Bill Parcells came in 2003. Between 2003 and his release in 2010, Adams was a five time Pro Bowl player while also earning All Pro honors in 2007. His consistent play at left tackle (only missing 14 games in 12 years with Dallas) proved to be important for a young Tony Romo.
Andre Gurode, 2002
Andre Gurode was drafted in 2002 and immediately became the starting center for the Dallas Cowboys, something unprecedented for this franchise. He later went on to play guard for two seasons before returning back to his center position. He was versatile and successful as he was selected to the Pro Bowl five straight times while also collecting two All Pro team nods.
Martellus Bennett, 2008
The Cowboys selected Marty B in 2008 to initiate a two tight-end set along with rising star, Jason Witten. His time in Dallas was marked by unfulfilled potential. While he did not contribute anything meaningful to the Cowboys organization, he played well in Chicago and then signed with the New England Patriots where he won a championship last season. He used his recent successes to sign a lucrative contract with the Green Bay Packers this off-season.
Sean Lee, 2010
Sean Lee came to Dallas in 2010 after dropping in the draft due to a pair of torn ACLs. His early time in Dallas was marred by a series of injuries but of late, he has solidified himself as one of the best linebackers in the NFL. In 2016, he was named a First Team All Pro linebacker and attended his second straight Pro Bowl. His statistics speak for themselves, but it is his leadership and intuitiveness that Dallas heavily relies on.
Other second-round picks for the Cowboys since 1995.
Sherman Williams (1995), Kendell Watkins (1995), Shane Hannah (1995), Kavika Pittman (1996), Randall Godfrey (1996), Solomon Page (1999), Dwayne Goodrich (2000), Quincy Carter (2001), Tony Dixon (2001), Antonio Bryant (2002), Al Johnson (2003), Julius Jones (2004), Jacob Rogers (2004), Kevin Burnett (2005), Anthony Fasono (2006), Bruce Carter (2011), Gavin Escobar (2013), DeMarcus Lawrence (2014), Randy Gregory (2015).
