We can now look back and see how well the Cowboys 2014 draft class did.

Mel Kiper recently did a re-grade for all of the 2014 drafts of the 32 NFL teams. Of course this included the Dallas Cowboys, and it was interesting to go back and look at just who the Cowboys drafted and how it all turned out. The success of Zack Martin and Anthony Hitchens were the highlights, but the Cowboys didn't get much else, although DeMarcus Lawrence is still an incomplete.

Here is how Kiper sees it now.

Round Pick Position Player College
(1) 16 T Zack Martin Notre Dame
(2) 34 DE Demarcus Lawrence Boise State
(4) 119 OLB Anthony Hitchens Iowa
(5) 146 WR Devin Street Pittsburgh
(7) 231 DE Ben Gardner Stanford
(7) 238 OLB Will Smith Texas Tech
(7) 248 S Ahmad Dixon Baylor
(7) 251 DT Ken Bishop Northern Illinois
(7) 254 DB Terrance Mitchell Oregon

Post-draft grade: B

Summary: Here's what I wrote then: "Give Jerry Jones credit: I don't think it's unfair to at least be tempted by the prospect of Johnny Football with that blue star on his helmet, playing in that football theatre. But Manziel isn't making Dallas a better team in 2014, and Tony Romo -- for all the derision -- is a really good QB when he gets protection. The Dallas offensive line with Zack Martin isn't just the strength of the team, it's arguably among the top few units in the NFL. They are going to be able to run the ball. I had Martin as high as the top 10, so that's not a bad pick."

I'm thrilled to see Martin do so well, because I really was a big fan. He as one of the better guards in the NFL this year and, along with Joel Bitonio of Cleveland, top rookies at that position. The one thing I should point out: If you draft a player at No. 16 with the intention of moving him to guard, you're expecting him to start. I'm not saying Dallas couldn't afford to miss, but they had to assume he was a starter because Martin obviously has more value at tackle. So the grade has to jump because they nail the pick, and it leads to more wins.

It's relatively quiet after that. DeMarcus Lawrence is going to be a player but had only 277 snaps after not seeing the field until Week 9. Anthony Hitchens provided some useful depth, as well, with over 600 snaps. That's really about it, though you could mention undrafted CB Tyler Patmon seeing some time. All in all, Dallas hit one great pick (so far) and mostly dodged a bullet in doing so. They also won a bunch, which is an added bonus.

New grade: B+

I guess that's fair although I'm not sure if I would have raised the grade. Obviously the Martin pick will probably forever make this draft somewhat of a success, but the Cowboys still are waiting to see how much help they will get elsewhere. As previously mentioned, Anthony Hitchens looks like he'll be a player who can help the Cowboys. Will he be a star, an elite player? Hard to say but you would guess he will be at least a solid contributor. Next year will probably tell us a lot about this draft, that should be the year we'll get to see if DeMarcus Lawrence was the right pick. If he becomes a baller, then the draft status will rise greatly, if he turns out to be just another guy, then you have to wonder if they did as well as they thought.

So far, Devin Street hasn't showed much, and Ken Bishop has done enough to just hang around. Everybody else was injured or waived at various times. (Maybe Ben Gardner will be back and we can make more Chuck Norris-type jokes about him, but this time he follows up on the field).

How would you re-grade the 2014 draft?

I wouldn't go higher than a B right now. Martin's all-world. Lawrence might be a player, I think he will. After that I don't know that there's a single quality player but there is still hope with a few of them.

Only because of Martin's historic year would I go as high as a B.

As usual, gradesare fun at times rather agree or disagree, but need another year, probably 2 years as we know. But the 1st 3 we know will all be A+

Round Pick Position Player College
(1) 16 T Zack Martin Notre Dame A+, this is a no brainer
(2) 34 DE Demarcus Lawrence Boise State B+, he was showing why they traded up for him, but though not on him, his injury brings it down
(4) 119 OLB Anthony Hitchens Iowa A here as well, again a no brainer, how many had him as a bust as soon as he was drafted. I didn't, but he played extremely well.

The rest are hard to grade, as what was really expected of them, but a mix of playing time, injuries and such, all but 2 shown they are worth keeping and getting playing time.
I won't give low grades to Dixon or Mitchell, as you can't hit on every player especially in the 7th round. So these do not get D's or F's.

(5) 146 WR Devin Street Pittsburgh we knew he wasn't going to contribute all that much, but I did expect him to play more than he did.
(7) 231 DE Ben Gardner Stanford injuries , but shown some potential
(7) 238 OLB Will Smith Texas Tech PS guy, stuck with team all year
(7) 248 S Ahmad Dixon Baylor had the heart but not the head
(7) 251 DT Ken Bishop Northern Illinois shown his potential too, will be good to see how he progresses
(7) 254 DB Terrance Mitchell Oregon shown he had the heart too, but just too many penalties on him, he needed time

Maybe a bit biased but I give them overall an A-

Im happy with the draft and if lawrence continues on with what he was doing in his last few games, ill be thrilled with it. I could not care less about anyone else's draft grade.

Still hate the trade up to get Lawrence.

Would have been nice to stay put and have the first four rounds look like this:

1. Zack Martin
2. Timmy Jernigan
3. Will Sutton
4. Anthony Hitchens

The production of Martin, Lawrence and Hitchens make this a B+ in my eyes too.

We'll know much more in two years, but the Cowboys struck gold in Martin, and so far silver in Hitchens and Lawrence.

The Cowboys didn't like Jernigan.

B+ is actually high. When a 2nd and 3rd rounder get no production all year how could you even grade it over a B?

Took the words right out of my mouth. Maybe Tuitt or Kareem Martin would have been nice also.

Lawrence had no production. He made two plays all year. Not saying he was a bust or anything, but he's a huge unknown at this point.

Stephen Jones came out and said if they hadn't traded up they would have taken Kony Ealy in the 2nd. Also said they would have taken Turner in 3rd and actually tried trading back into 3rd for him. So your looking at.

1. Martin
2. Ealy
3. Trai Turner
4. Hitchens

I'll take it.

Ealy made the all rookie team this season, and Turner could eventually compete with (and provide insurance for) Leary.

We'll will see how this turns out and if having just Lawrence is better than having both Ealy and Turner.

I know the 2012 trade-up was disastrous. After that trade, I think Jones said the choices would have been Michael Brockers and Bobby Wagner instead of Claiborne.

Can you imagine this team if we had those two instead of Claiborne right now?

Good post. Makes you wonder what JJ thinks about trading up now.

Closer to platinum for Martin, IMHO!

You have one for-sure starter (Martin)
One very good depth guy and potential future starter (Hitchens)
One hopeful starter at an impact position (Lawrence)

The biggest concern is that's three players, with only one sure fire starter and two depth guys right now. If either Hitchens or Lawrence turn into a full time quality starter and the other is quality depth, that's good enough for a B+, If either of those don't happen, the draft is a problem. For a draft to be a true success, I want 4-5 roster players who are still meaningful 3 years after they are drafted. I'm seeing that as questionable right now.

maybe when the 2nd makes plays to seal the win in a playoff game?

i guess i'd have to see what was considered an A or A-....

even the 7ths that didn't stick played elsewhere.
dallas had a very strong draft class last year.
injuries aside, they picked guys who could play football.

and they had a nice contribution from a rookie class towards making the playoffs.
very nice +5 wins from the prior year with minimal free agent help.

Not sure how to put this nicely but essentially this is goofy.
There isn't a single playoff team that had more rookie starts than the Dallas Cowboys.

And Zach Martin was arguably the best OL on the best line in football.
Martin is an ALL-PRO. That goes pretty far beyond being a starter.

Hitchens started at all 3 LB positions across the season. He passed Wilber and at times was our best LB as a rookie.
A 4th round rookie. Right now he may well be the MOST COVETED of the LBs on the team. He has position flex, has stayed healthy and is cheap for YEARS.
He isn't some possible future starter and quality back up. He is a LOCK to start next year.
DeMarcus Lawrence was probably our best pass rusher in the playoffs. He may not start next year but he is an NFL pass rusher who will only improve as he gets reps and further away from injury.

Only teams that suck hit on 5 guys a year as contributors. Good teams don't maintain that many spots to fill.
Dallas put 3 players on the top 35 players in the organization from one draft. Any team would gladly take that.
Any team who could do that and make the playoffs would be winning GM type awards like Jerry just did.
