The first of their two fourth-round picks is in.
The Dallas Cowboys finally decided to grab a defensive end in the 2016 draft, picking up Charles Tapper from Oklahoma. The Cowboys pass rush has been an issue for a few years, they hope this pick will help to get that problem fixed. Tapper is a versatile end with a big physical build. He has some athleticism but needs to work on his technique. Pad level and hand placement are two of the criticisms, but obviously something that can be fixed with coaching.
There is a lot of raw potential with Tapper. One site even compared him to the Cowboys Jack Crawford, a player who has developed into a nice piece for the Cowboys. I wouldn't expect Tapper to be a sack machine, but with proper coaching he could become a versatile player who plug holes and and be a key part of a defensive line rotation. The Cowboys are banking on Leon Lett and Rod Marinelli being able to coach him up.
CBS Sports:
COMPARES TO: Allen Bailey, Kansas City: After underwhelming for much of his career at Miami, Bailey has emerged as a quality five-tech defensive end in Kansas City's 3-4 scheme. Tapper has a similar combination of power and athleticism but must commit to his craft (as Bailey did) to enjoy similar success in the NFL.
IN OUR VIEW: Possessing a stout frame and surprising overall athleticism, Tapper is a quality all-around defensive lineman offering positional and scheme versatility. That combination will likely will earn Tapper a spot in the top 100, even though he was a bit inconsistent over his career.
