The Cowboys use their second-round pick on CB Chidobe Awuzie.

With the 60th pick, the Dallas Cowboys address their secondary by picking Colorado cornerback Chidobe Awuzie. The Cowboys desperately needed help at corner after losing Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne.

BOTTOM LINE Sticky man-cover corner who possesses the reactive athleticism and foot quickness to maintain coverage responsibilities around the field. Awuzie's combination of size and speed pairs well with his instincts providing him what he needs to compete downfield. His inconsistencies as a tackler could turn off some teams, but his abilities as a gunner on special teams may counter that. He can play outside or in the slot and has traits and talent to compete for early playing time.

Lockdown corner and fluid athlete with terrific awareness for the position. Good closing speed and times his leaps well to break up receptions. Four-year starter with extensive experience coming out of the competitive Pac-12.

His play style really is sort of linebacker-ish. During a four-year run at Colorado, Awuzie played outside cornerback, nickelback, and safety. He never became an interception master (he had three in four years), but he knocked down a bunch of passes and made a bunch of tackles.

Cowboys Needs:


Defensive line/edge rusher: The Cowboys have needed help here for years, ever since the departure of DeMarcus Ware. DE Taco Charlton

Cornerback: The Cowboys lost Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne in free agency. They still have three corners who can play, in Orlando Scandrick, Nolan Carroll and Anthony Brown, but they need depth, and a possible upgrade. CB Chidobe Awuzie

Safety: Starter Barry Church and sometime-starter/reserve J.J. Wilcox both exited in free agency, leaving the Cowboys with Byron Jones and question marks. Jeff Heath is currently the other starter, but a high pick int he draft could become the starter at the position.

Right Tackle: Doug Free is retiring, and Chaz Green has yet to show he can stay healthy. Free agent signee Byron Bell is a stop-gap, the Cowboys need to find the future at the position.
