New York Giants

2013 Record 7-9 Third Place NFC East

  • Head coach Tom Coughlin got some good news on Sunday. Linebacker Jon Beason, who breathed a semblance of life in to the Giants defense when he joined the team during the middle of the 2013 season, has finally been cleared to return to action for the first time since injuring his foot during OTAs. Beason is expected to be active for Sunday's opening game, but there is a question as to how much he will be able to participate.
  • The news regarding the Giants first round draft pick, Odell Beckham, Jr, has not been as encouraging to the New York front office.

When a coach begs people to stop asking about the progress of the first-round pick, that means there probably isn't much progress. #nyg

During his rant about questions regarding Beckham, Coughlin indicated that the rookie's debut may be at least three weeks into the season.

"I think we need to get better in the passing attack, finding completions, hitting some big plays down the field. But we've been doing that in practice, so we've made some strides and made some plays, and we just have to keep protecting the ball and playing smart. We've gotten ourselves into some pretty good third-down situations as of late. We've just got to convert them." - Eli Manning
  • The Giants will begin the 2014 NFL season by visiting the Detroit Lions on Monday night, You can check out the G-men during the early game on ESPN's Monday Night Football. For the best in coverage of the New York Giants, visit our SB Nation colleagues at Big Blue View.

Washington Commanders

2013 Record 3-13 Last Place NFC East

  • The Washington defensive secondary, which was a point of weakness in 2013, continues to be an area of concern for the team and with Brandon Meriweather starting the season on suspension the team took steps to strengthen themselves via the waiver wire. The Skins just added former Denver Broncos safety Duke Ihenacho who started 14 games last season including the Super Bowl.

"I think he brings some experience to the table. He started a lot of games last year for Denver. He’s a tough guy and became available. We didn’t know who was going to come available. We saw that he was there, we put a claim into him because of the experience level and special teams experience. We thought he could be an immediate help for us and luckily we got him." - Jay Gruden
  • Last season was a nightmare for the Washington franchise, at least as far as special teams were concerned, In fact, I quipped about the ongoing disaster multiple times in the Weekly BEast Report. New head coach Jay Gruden has made "teams" a priority on his first 53-man roster. Even more than in most cases, the Washington cuts were influenced by how down roster players delivered on special teams.
  • After a season that saw his feud with head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan result in the termination of both coaches, rumblings are starting to be heard that the Commanders are not overly pleased with the efforts that Robert Griffin,III is putting forth. Former Washington QB Doug Williams has been brought in to serve as a mentor to the young passer, but Griffin is not doing much to take advantage of the opportunity.
  • Washington will begin the campaign by visiting Houston to challenge the Texans on Sunday. You can follow our colleagues at Hog's Haven for top notch Washington Commanders coverage.

Philadelphia Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation
Philadelphia Eagles

2013 Record 10-6 First Place NFC East

  • The Eagles are getting ready for life after DeSean Jackson by making some changes to their offensive philosophy. One key move is more two tight end sets. With Zach Ertz and Brent Celek both on the roster, look for Chip Kelly to scheme toward getting both men more involved. Another key addition to the Eagles passing game will be Jordan Matthews, the rookie from Vanderbilt, who has impressed in camp.
  • One thing that will help to slow down Kelly's fast paced offense will be the four game suspension that right tackle Lane Johnson will serve to start the season. His place will be taken by Allen Barbre, who was shaky during the preseason. Last year's #4 overall draft pick has saw extended work during the preseason in an effort to help him get ready for the time away from the game. That translates into even less work for his back who will be starting in Johnson's stead to open the season.
  • One thing that should concern Dallas Cowboys fans (as well as the rest of the division) is that LeSean McCoy is setting his sights on getting better. Shady is looking for a 2,000 yard season in 2014 and putting in the effort to achieve that milestone.

There's different things that I can get better at. A lot of players, they hide it because they get to a certain level where they feel they're so good. I don't hide it. If I have a bad game, I'll sit here and tell you I had a bad game. That's something I try to get better at. I want to be elite all the time. Not just Sundays, every day." - LeSean McCoy
